My wife and I purchased a Boston piano from Biggars at a very competitive price and we were delighted with the service we received. The piano was delivered by a professional specialist piano removers who were humourous, helpful and efficient. Biggars also arranged to have the piano tuned as part of the purchase and this was carried out as agreed. They also arranged a course of lessons and the tuition received was of a very high standard. I have no hesitation in recommending Biggars to potential clients.

Bought my daughter her first guitar at the weekend and couldn't be more chuffed. The service was great and so was the price, even sorted her some music lessons. I have used the shops sheet music site many times which can sometimes be a wee bit slow but the guys get things sorted straight away if you've got a problem. What a great wee shop in the city centre!

I made an order with these guys two months ago now, and having let the (quite urgent order) sit on "order pending" for 4 weeks I e-mailed an enquiry, then another a week later, BOTH of which I only received automated responses saying they will "aim to reply to you within 24 hours of receipt". Still no word from them, money out of my account, yet another e-mail been ignored. VERY BAD BUSINESS.
There is no phone number on there website - be warned!

This shop has lots of - well everything! Big change from the last time I was in Biggars which was a couple of years ago and it wasn't looking good. But now it's as I rememebr it used to be. Good luck to them. (I've posted a similar review on Google - hop that's ok?).

My son's music teacher asked me to get a piano exam book. I went to another store in Glasgow but they didn't have what I needed. Biggars had the book and the young man who served me was really helpful, as I didn't bother looking for the book but just went to the counter and asked.

Biggars is a big part of my musical life. My dad bought my first flute here many, many years ago and although I've strayed once or twice I've been pretty loyal. I'm not saying everythings always perfect but I always get treated with courtesy and noone tries to rip me off. So for these reasons and the fact they're still here I give Biggars 5.

Bought a used Yamaha piano from Biggars last week. Thought the price was very good (checked on-line as there are quite a few dealers selling used Yamaha pianos). Delivered by a specialist piano company who were excellent. No complaints, completely happy.

Biggars has a bad reputation but thanks to the change in management this is changing. From the street it can look quite small, but inside it is generously proportioned and bright. The second surprise is the food, which is cheaply priced with generous portions. Their selection includes a variety of sandwiches on a choice of breads, freshly homemade soup and baked potatoes all served with salad and crisps. They also have a wide selection of homemade cakes, biscuits and snacks, and their coffee is decent. It is definitely one of the few places in the city centre where you can get a good meal under a fiver.

I ordered a digital piano (Yamaha Clavinova) from Biggars as they were the cheapest I could find online and appeared genuine (backed up by a music store in central Glasgow, easily contactable by phone etc.)
Unfortunately it arrived damaged. As a specialist music dealer I expected them to put things right but I am now writing this a month later and I still have no piano despite them having collected the broken unit and claiming to have dispatched a replacement. They are placing the blame on their couriers rather than taking responsibility for the situation themselves.
I have wasted so many hours making phone calls to Biggars and to the couriers (UK Mail), writing follow up emails, getting false promises but things haven't been moving forward. Stay well clear!

Sorry that you were not pleased with your experience. We have now replaced the piano. We hope that you are enjoying it. We would have been glad if you had updated this comment to include the fact that the replacement was lost by the courier but that all is well now.Sometimes things go wrong but we always try to do right by our customers and we try to live and learn.

As Biggars have pointed out I did eventually receive a replacement piano on 8 April. I say "eventually" as the problem with the original piano was known to them from 5 March!
The reason I was not pleased with my experience is that during that one month period I had the damaged piano, I was continually writing, emailing to find out what was going on and had very little communication at all from Biggars. As a dealer "famous for providing great value and excellent service" I would at least expect to be contacted to know what is going on. Unfortunately I had very little response to my letters and emails to them and it wasn't until I phoned them myself (after first having contacted Consumer Direct, my credit card company and even the Music Sales Manager at Yamaha UK's Electronic Music Division who had to put his service manager in contact with the owner of Biggars Music) that I was told 'oh, the new piano arrived with us yesterday but I was out' and 'we can't send it to you until we've picked up the faulty one from you first'. Something that they could have done at any point during the previous four weeks.
I complied with their request and they sent the new piano using the same courier as before (UKMail, who delivered my old piano damaged). Although they used a 24 hour service, this time UK Mail lost the replacement piano and it arrived more than a week later than promised - totally ruining my Easter break as UK Mail had been telling me 'it'll arrive tomorrow' and advising me to be at home for a possible delivery. Again, when it finally came it was delivered upside down and I took photos of it in the delivery van as proof. UK Mail truly cut corners at every stage of the process. Despite being clear that they were required to uplift the faulty piano from my front door (and saying to me on the phone they were sending two people and me telling them that the box was very clearly marked as containing a total weight of 103 kg) they only sent the driver and both myself and my neighbour had to help with the lifting.
Biggars didn't even bother contacting me to check I was happy with the new piano or to offer me any compensation that they may have been able to claim for the week's delay caused by the couriers losing the replacement unit. It beggars belief to see that they are finding time to respond to my comment in a public forum but ignored so many of my emails to them in my capacity as a customer, in which they could have put things right.
Read what some have said. Not sure they get this place. It’s not a guitar shop and doesn’t try to be. After they were in the news recently dropped in to buy a music book.( Will always prefer to actually see and hold my music and instruments before I buy them)Haven’t been in for a bit. Things had been moved about and I couldn’t see what I was after. The woman who served me was very friendly and helpful and pointed out other useful stuff too. Will definately be back.

I went in to enquire about upgrading a sax for my daughter. The guy who helped me was really knowledgeable and friendly. I got a great deal on a fantastic instrument (so her teacher says) and they were able to recommend some fun music for her to play at home. We had a really good coffee afterwards in the cafe. This place does not seem to be a “rock” shop but it does exactly what they say and is a really good “family “music store.

Not really sure if this place is a music shop or a cafe nowadays. Disappointed with the stock of music and i certainly wouldn’t describe the staff as helpful. A definite take it or leave attititude is evident; fair enough so I left less than 5 minutes after I had gone in and found what I wanted elsewhere. In the internet age this is one shop that needs to up its game and get dragged into the 21st century.
I won’t be back in the shop again, there are plenty of other music retailers who provide a better service.

Biggars is a music shop with a long tradition behind it. However the competition from the internet these days for such specialist stores must be intense, and they have tried to adapt to the times by making it more of a drop in experience, with a cafe prominently to the fore. Staff are helpful and sometimes knowledgeable, but the location means it is still very quiet, which is a shame. There is a huge section at the back, and rooms upstairs which hardly ever seem to have anyone in them.

This place has gone downhill - it prides itself on being a knowledgable and traditional kind of shop, but it’s level of chock and range of choice suggest otherwise. It seems more interested in being a cafe thesedays than a proper music shop.

Did you go downstairs because I'm pretty sure when you go downstairs theres a tonne of sheet music and over 100 guitars on the wall and a full brass and woodwind cabinet
Went here in October 2008 and was bitterly disappointed! Absolutely hopeless when it came to finding anyone who knew anything about guitars. We went downstairs to that department and asked the young assistant some questions about a Godin guitar we wanted to buy - they didn’t stock it and knew nothing about how to obtain one. When the older man came off the phone he ignored us and didn’t try to help. We then went over to Merchant City Music where the staff knew exactly what we were looking for and couldn’t have been friendlier either! (Shall add that review later) Probably good for pianos or sheet music but I definitely wouldn’t recommend Biggars to an experienced guitarist.

Probably because they aren’t a guitar shop!
-
Jane_Elizabeth, 20 January 2009:
But they sell guitars - !!
-
betsboy, 25 January 2009:
Fair point but not ONLY a guitar shop. They sell loads of other instruments too, unlike MCM!! Can’t compare apples with oranges I’m afraid.

pete_herring1, 20 April 2011:
I concur, its a general music shop not a guitar shop, Merchy is just a guitar shop and Godin guitars are pretty specialist as very few people stock them let alone have heard of them, pretty shoddy review tbh

It was the unhelpful staff which really got to me, that was the main reason for my low rating. I'm sick and tired of bad service which is like a disease in this country these days. I always go into a shop being friendly myself and it's like a slap in the face when staff can't be bothered to be welcoming or helpful as if it's just too much trouble.
I don't know why my review is shoddy when it's my honest account of what happened that day. (Incidentally, I don't understand what tbh means)

Fair enough I think we've both had very different experiences of the shop as every time I've been in since the new owners bought it the staff have been very helpful, sometimes a bit slow to help but they always do in the end, tbh - to be honest

Thanks Pete. I will go back next time I'm in Glasgow and will alter or update my review then (as I've just done with my recent B&Q one)
