Nice place to eat everytime! We like specially the desserts :-)
Let's be honest, you wouldn't go to a S&L for a romantic dinner for two, but for a cheap, filling, tasty lunch on the run you can't go wrong.
The one waitress on duty today was doing a sterling job of juggling all the tables (my heart went out to her when the 20-strong hen party walked in as we walked out...).
With mains at £5.95 each (I had the sausage and mash) and deserts permanantly 2-4-1, it's great value. My dining partner had the rump steak for £9.95 and it was better than some meat I've had at twice that price.
The food won't win awards, but it fills a hole at a price that won't empty your wallet.
Nice venue in the centre of Soho with the usual decor and the usual menu.
We went with a 50% off voucher so our meal was excellent value but to be honest the portions were so large it was good value whatever the price.
Although a big bar and being situated in the centre of Soho it did feel like it had no soul. Slug’s tend to be neither bars nor restaurants and seem the struggle to find their place. This one is no exception.
I think it’s an odd location for a Slug to be honest but it served it’s purpose last night by giving us decent food at a decent price.
The service for a West End venue could have been better too - the fifth member of our table had to ask for cutlery!
Obviously this is one of the “chain” bars around town, so not a lot varies between each branch.
This one is fairly large, always pretty busy and does a lot of decent wines by the glass (at a price, but you do seem to get a HUGE glass of wine).
Not a bad place if you are meeting a crowd of people, before going out to dinner in Soho. If you get there early and bag one of the sofas or larger tables, even better. I wouldn’t spend a whole evening here as it can get quite loud. I think they do food, but I haven’t eaten here.
I have no loyalties to any chain bars. Generally I hate the idea of same same experience in different places. That’s why Nando’s shouldn’t be on church st.
But I can’t dislike a place just because it’s a part of a chain, and I admit to having had at least two great nights in this pub. It happens that one was a work party and everything was free and the other would probably have been a great night anyway given the company.
Actually I was in Timeout magazine for the first one - very drunk.
Anyway it’s a little like a McDonalds in China this place, a comforting bit of ordinary in exotic surrounds. Standard beer, food etc. The downstairs room is an excellent place for functions. If you had a free slug voucher then I would spend it here.
This branch of Slug and Lettuce is quite a good refuge away from the chaos of Soho and Oxford Street.
I only ever come here during the day of after work, when it’s not busy and so when there are seats available and not hundreds of people.
I find the atmosphere here relaxing and laid back - it’s good for getting a drink and sitting back and catching up with a friend. I would never both coming here for any other reason, as it’s not exciting or dynamic enough to provide any other kind of experience.
I’m amazed by the price of food on the menu here as it never looks appetising and I can’t imagine it being that good.
For food the Slug and Lettuce is only so-so. I had the thai green curry, and well you’re eating from a pub so I wasn’t expecting much - it was edible though and made a change from getting pie and mash and the like.
The two for one on desserts offer when you purchase a main though is ok, and the portion size was pretty good.
I probably wouldn’t eat here again but can recommend it for drinking if you are in the area.
The staff are friendly and the toilets are clean.
When besuited City workers and the objects of their laddish leering decide for an 'edgy’ evening out in London’s premier hotbed of vice but then don’t like the look of the grotty pubs they chicken out and go somewhere like this or the nearby All Bar One. I very rarely darken the door of this Slug and Lettuce because I could find one anywhere else in London and there are better options in Soho anyway - there are at least five better pubs within a two minute walk of this one.
It’s not that there’s anything wrong with it - it’s clean, the prices are reasonable enough and I’m told the food is good - but it’s simply in the wrong place. Soho doesn’t need pubs like this.
Found this to be a pleasant yet quite dear place to drink.
The pub looks nice and you usually see workers from the city here at lunch on weekdays, which gives it kind of a yuppie feel at times, which ain’t necessarily bad.
The food here is also good, had the thai chicken curry, absolutely delicious.
Went here on a work night out not long ago, and found it to be rather pleasant. Didn’t try the food, so I can’t comment as far as that’s concerned, though we had a round of drinks for 5 people which came to around 20 quid. Standard London prices then, really. We sat in the downstairs, where it’s relatively chilled out - comfy seats and not too much noise, so you can easily have a group conversation.
the slug and lettuce chains in general are a slight variant of wetherspoons- and frankly, i think they are all right (any place where darling hasn’t upped the pricesis good!). I would go as far to say they are better- the decor is cleaner, the staff quicker, and you generally have a better experience
I’ve only every been to a few Slug and Lettuces on the 'biltong belt’ or Australian nations below the river and have found it to be not that dissimilar to a roudy Walkabout. Because of this I automatically assumed all Slug and Lettuce branches throbbed with snake-bite inebriated antipodeans, were cheap but fun and not the classiest joints around town.
So I was gob-smacked when a well-to-do friend said that was the meeting point for pre-dinner drinks. I nervously stepped inside. Blinked. Stepped outside to look at the sign above the door to make sure I hadn’t gone in a different restaurant. What a weird site - it was so clean, so mature, so civilised. Everyone seemed to be seated and there was no drunken pawing at the bar. This was like a completely different place that had forgotten to change the sign board when they moved in.
Just goes to show - a franchise can differ hugely from one to the next. Don’t be afraid to give this one a go. No they won’t give you free beer if you get your t*ts out, but instead you’ll get a well-maintained, classy but affordable joint (£15 bottle of wine) to meet your city friends after work.
