Review of Deason's Restaurant from 2 February 2009

The surroundings around Deasons make its tucked away location quite lovely. Also, after having watched some BBC programme enthusiastically recommending the restaurant and the expreneurship of the owner, I was full of expectations and excitement, as I’ve been looking for a mature and sophisticated restaurant in Bristol to eat in.

It was my boyfriend’s birthday, so I decided to treat him. On arrival, the atmosphere was very quiet, and tranquil, which seemed lovely. The staff were polite and took us to our chairs, asking if we would like to order drinks. I had to drive home, so I could not drink, and my boyfriend doesn’t like to drink alone, so both of us ordered water. The staff seemed to frown and didn’t seem impressed (probably since they gain a lot of revenue on wine).

However, we were brought olives to snack on, whilst deciding what to eat. The menu was seasonal and so the choice was limited. In the end, my boyfriend settled on Pork Medallion in Onion Gravy, and me on Seabass with PakChoi and noodles. On first glance, I was very impressed on the international cuisine and the fusion recipes on the menu.

On being brought the food, it was warm (rather than hot) even though we were 1 of 2 customers. My meal was very odd tasting - trying to be Asian/Thai but failing to get the right flavours. My boyfriend’s meal (from what he said) was very reminiscent of Wetherspoon’s i.e. pub food. Which considering the price tag, probably wasn’t such a good thing.

So we thought, if we wanted that type of food, we’d go to Wetherspoons. Furthermore, I was really let-down by the fusion cooking (as it had really weird but bland tastes), and I’d rather go to a traditional Thai restaurant anyday.

In the end - for water, olives, and 2 main courses only, we ended up paying in the region of 90.00! On arriving home later that night, both my boyfriend and myself had awful stomach ache, which we attributed to the food. It might have been a one-off occassion, but we’ve been put off now. Since, we’ve been to the Glassboat on Welshback and it’s been lovely there everytime!
