Review of Wild Elephant from 30 January 2012

Found this restaurant, as it was near the hotel my gf and I were staying at on Mayfield Gardens. We went in as the menu looked nice on our way back to the hotel. Inside the restaurant appeared rather strange, like an old pub but the women that greeted us was very friendly and informed me that we could BYOB, (bring your own booze). We ordered, then I walked a few doors down to a local off-license, where i purchased four cans of Carlsberg. My gf ordered a glass of wine and we both ordered thai green curry.

The food was very nice and the service continued to be friendly. The restaurant wasn’t very busy, maybe this was because we visited at 7pm on a Sunday night.

Overall if you are in the locality of Newington Road and you like thai food, this place is a must visit. It is probably cheaper than restaurants in central Edinburgh, but this doesn’t mean the quality of the food is compromised.

I’ve had a good experience with this restaurant 2 years ago so I decided to go there again for dinner. As a Thai cuisine lover I have to say that the quality has changed. I have had a main course, a fried egg rice and a beer and paid almost £20 for a tough dry meat with onions, mushrooms and an undefinable sauce. The course was served 5 minutes after I placed my order, which isn’t a particularly good sign…
The friendly staff saved the second star.

Never tried it myself but a friend of mine likes it and told me that the dishes are very delicious, as I am a good Thai cuisine lover and I would certainly appreciate the place. My friend is not a wine lover, he follows the old beer traditions of the country, however, he did spot some clients bringing in their own bottles of wine and it was perfectly fine. The only grudging he had regarded something about the opening hours of the place, seems that the restaurant is not opened all days. Despite all that, it is in my list of new places to visit.

This lovely little Thai place doesn’t seem to be open consistently, but when it is, it makes very nice food. Perfect for a lunch out with workmates, or as the start to an evening out, this place is not expensive and serves up good two-or-three course lunches and dinners. The waitresses are friendly and helpful, although sometimes they seem to struggle a little with English.

I definitely recommend this place and look forward to my next visit!

Glad to see good reviews for this restaurant on here as its little known outside Newington (which is often avoided being considered too studenty). I used to live round the corner from here as a student but found Wild Elephant to have a wide mix of clientèle. It was one of my favourite places for takeaway and the food was always fantastic and reasonably priced

We went the Wild Elephant one Tuesday evening. We managed to book it through 5pm.co.uk and took advantage of the 3 course pre-theatre meal for £9.99 each. We were pleasantly surprised. The food was very good and the staff we extremely friendly. They do sell alcohol but they also allow you to 'Bring your own bottle’ so that helped to save some money too (£3.00 corkage). It is on Newington Road and regular busses stop right outside the door so it is very handy to get to from Pincess street. Internal decor is fairly basic and could do with some modernisation but on the whole a very positive experience.

Booked a deal here for 3 courses for £9.99 for 18 people at 19:00 so little did I expect the restaurant to call me on the day and ask what time I’d booked for. The deal stopped promptly at 19:00 despite being offered up to that point (something to do with a changeover in the kitchen but why then not offer it only till 18:45?).

The food we did finally have was as tasty as you’d expect for Thai & reasonably priced. Not 100% certain we were charged corkage on all or any of our wine as the staff seemed a little discombobulated but that may have had something to do with our request for a basin of water to sit a bunch of rubber ducks in …
