Bar Zwo11, Hoheluft-West, Hamburg

Been to Zwo a few times whenever I get the chance to visit Hamburg. It’s one of those lounge style bars that most people will either love or hate (I very much like it) with rather surreally soundless wildlife documentaries being projected onto the side wall of the bar. The entrance door is shrouded in a thick curtain and the seats, sofas and tables are low-lying…just perhaps a little too low but that, I guess, depends on how tall you are!
Quite a mixed clientel whenever I’ve been there and they do a fair range of beers and cocktails. I’ve only been in the bar part of the place and not the restaurant so you’ll have to rely on other reviewers for that.
The bar is in Hoheluft Ost which is quite a nice part of Hamburg in an area of large old houses, seemingly unscathed from the bombing in the 1940s. It’s barely 10 minutes walk from the U Bahn station (U3).

Were here recently as it's near to where I live and we simply were walking around looking for a place to grab a drink. I'm a bit torn about this place. The crowd is a weird mix. Somehow it doesn't really fit together at all i.e. I couldn't recommend it to a specific group of people. Further, it's one of those over-designed lounge places which are now dotted all over the place. I'd basically give this place 3 stars if I were to stop there. I may actually even say two stars as there really isn't anything about the decor or crowd that makes it worth revisiting. So why 4 stars? Well the bartender really knows what he's doing. We hung out for a bit and started a conversation with him. We were impressed by the first round of cocktails we ordered (something not on a menu but he knew how to make it!) Anyway, he had some new gins which had just come in and we start experimenting a bit. He even threw in a couple rounds on the house. One way or another, this is how I like bartenders to behave. We actually ended up spending far more than originally planned and stayed far longer than expected. In hindsight we had a great time, tried out some really good, new-to-me drinks and just because of this, will definitely be back. I hope the guy remembers us and is just as talkative and experimental next time.

Fish fish fish fish fish. Yes, this bar has an amazing projector showing undersea scenes non-stop. Initially I thought it was some sort of gimmick, but when I saw that the names of the fish occasionally pop up, I realised it’s actually a valuable educational tool!

Other than that, it’s desperately stylish, with all the features that come with such a bar - overpriced drinks, uncomfortable seating that’s a bit shiny and far too low, very dim lighting, no atmosphere, old women with dogs… oh wait…!

Yes it’s true - this is the bar of choice for Lassie! 3 stars.

Upper-class restaurant and lounge-style bar in one... actually: two parts! ;-)
Awesome food in the one half influenced by Mediterranean style, very good!
Nice chill-out area, bar in lounge-style with sofas and couches in the other half.
