I was there myself that day and saw you walk out after 10 minutes you didnt even finish your half pint of lager and the young girl was upset as she had tried so hard to please everyone

Worse was yet to come when one of the Staff followed us out of the Restaurant with a snivveling apology begging us to return, saying that they weren't expecting any bookings for Lunch! Why are they spending money on Radio advertising then?
If this had been a 'one off' I might have put it down to bad luck, notwithstanding the fact that they were hardly rushed off their feet with about a dozen cars in the car park when we arrived, but a similar thing happened to us about four years ago at The Old Shire - then we were left for 45 minutes before we'd had enough and left.
It seems that instead of spending money on Radio advertising, they'd do better to spend it on Staff.
I won't give them a third chance!

We were there over 30 minutes and nobody came to our table from the time we were shown to our table and left with two Menus to the time we walked out. I even had to go to the Bar to get a round of drinks for myself, something a concientious waitress would have asked once we were seated. As for a young girl trying to please everyone, she never visited our table and the young couple with the toddler in the high-chair seated next to us, were also still waiting for their food order to be taken when we left. The only young girl we saw was the one who served me at the Bar who was also the one who tried grovelling to get us to return to the restaurant.
As for the food and service itself, I found that the menu catered for everything you would hope to expect when you visit a restaurant, at reasonable prices especially in comparisson to some places around the area. The steak I had was cooked superbly which you can tell is cooked on a chargrill which gives you that unique flavor. It was delivered to my table which is what I expect when I go to a restaurant rather then having to leave my table and collect it myself like the way it used to be.
Furthermore, my wife had the carvery and I was surprised to see gammon as a choice, which was cooked perfectly according to my wife. The vegetables were piping hot as opposed to before and the chefs kept the carvery area clean with minimal mess which makes it a lot more appealing from a customers perspective.
we WILL be back again sooner than later, fantastic!

One of the staff were very rude to a gentleman on the next table slamming down his food.
the portions have all been made smaller and prices have gone up , chips were anemic and raw in parts usually go there all the time but will never be going back tables are lower than the chairs came out with sore backs didn't have starter and left after our mains as we were so unhappy with the service and food

We visited the Shire last Saturday evening the first time for 3 years after a disappointed evening there, where the staff were rude and the portions that the Shire have always been known for got smaller. Got to say my steak although a decent size was burnt on the outside and was all I could taste, chips were very nice. The side salad that came to the table beside us looked very good. The service was rushed, we left after out main meal, because they did not bring us the dessert menu or bill, I think they could do with some more staff on busy nights. We will give it another chance to see what the carvery is like, but in my mind and I am sure many others, the Shire has not been the same since Donna left, she was the very best!

Donna was not all she was cracked up to be, the façade she put up was hard working but this was not the case, she spent a lot of time rushing around looking busy whilst the other staff did the majority of the work…………..after all the pendarves has now closed speaks for itself!!

Visited this restaurant recently, could not believe the place is still in business. The restaurant was freezing, there were people there who didnt taken their coats off all night. I was sat near to the carvery and there was obviously a door in the kitched that kept being opened and evey now and again another blast of icy air came in. The menus were on fold out cards, this is supposed to be a restaurant not the local wetherspoons. There was no sense of real service, the waistress stands at the end of the table and everyone shouts their orders down. When I arrived to join my party I was vaguely waved in the direction of the restaurant not taken to the table. The food was mediocre, the prices reflected that. The toilets are shabby, the floor in the toilets was sticky. The carpet in the restaurant looked dated and worn as did the rest of the decor. I really wanted to find something good about this place, but I couldnt. This used to be a good place to eat, what has happened I dont know, its a shame cause its a lovely building and in the right hands it could be fabulous. I certaintly wont be holding any more works functions there and I will not recommend it to anybody.

I would just like to reply to this review above. Things had slipped recently the owner came back from France to “take over” again, with a view to sell. He quite honestly ran the place down and the staff too, he didnt want to be there and he made that obvious to all who went through the doors (staff or customers). I know quite a few of the staff there and yes with any organisation there are good and bad but it really was not the staffs fault. On the positive side the previous owner has sold up (about as month ago) and although there is still plenty of work to do to the aesthetics the place is a lot more happier and welcoming. Please try it again you will be pleasantly surprised.

I completely agree with foxylady123. This new owner has ruined shire, we most defiantly wont be going back and was very disappointed with our meal last Saturday.

I would like to disagree with all that has been said the only problem l can see is that the new owner has not made enough changes same old rude staff same chefs but then there is not a lot they could have done in one week but they have cleaned the place which was very much in need of and having gone back recently they have started to change a lot of things for the good WILL BE BACK
Regular visitor who is never disappointed.
Delicious home cooked food at great prices. Value for money is second to none.
The menu has something for everyone and you always feel welcome no matter how busy it is.
Highly recommended.

A lovely family, friendly place to eat. The food is excellent, the prices are very reasonable and there is always something on the menu to suit everyone. We all had the carvery and have no complaints whatsoever. There was a good range of vegetables & meats to choose from all of which were piping hot. The place is massive and you seem to be able to eat in either the restaurant, bar or conservatory. We were in the restaurant which had a lovely atmosphere. There were plenty of staff mulling round the place who were all very polite & friendly. We didnt have room for desserts, but I am sure they tasted as good as they looked. We will certainly be returning again very soon with the extended family.

Very nice place to have a cosy dinner. It’s very out of the way so you will need a taxi if you are drinking but it is a very well known local place to go for a top notch carvery. Been to a few corporate events and wedding receptions here and they are well organised and friendly. Overall I’d say the Shire is cost, friendly and a worthwhile place to visit.

On a Sunday, a traditional carvery is served, which is more or less all you can eat and you can go up and get the meal whenever you want. During the Christmas period it can get quite busy so booking is advisable. Last Christmas when we went for are yearly Christmas meal, we were put out in the conservatory which was very cold and cramped. We were not as impressed as the year before, so we have decided not to go back again this year. Having said that the food is of a very high quality and if you are in the restaurant itself, the seating is very nice and warm.
