Akins Family Bakers

I came across this bakery by accident, while wandering around the area when on holiday last summer.  I was very impressed by the range of bread and cakes on offer, and although all the cakes looked amazing the Russian slices captivated me.  I was very sad when they ran out!!
Hopefully I will be back next year.

This is a family run bakers and has a nice selection of pies pastries, pasies and breads. The taste of the produce is first class and very filling.
The prices are very reasonable and the staff are very friendly, the pies are lovely and are full to the brim woth filling and are much better than the pies you get from the larger bakers.

Akins is a great little independent bakery - one of a dying breed left in South Shields. They sell all manner of bakery items - bread, cakes, sausage rolls, pasties - as well as cooked meats, crisps, drinks and other things! The staff are very friendly and the bakery products are generally very good. It goes without saying that you pay more for homemade stuff (rather than some of the prepacked rubbish you find in supermarkets) but it is definitely worth paying slightly more as the difference is in the taste.

They are always packed on a lunchtime with college students as they do sell sandwiches and other lunch items, so it is best to go before or after the lunchtime rush if you are in a hurry.

All in all I really like this bakery. Especially the chocolate ginger cake!
