Manufactum Hoof und Partner KG

Although I love the concept of this place, the store itself is poorly executed. I know the J. Petermann catalog from the US which Manufactum basically copied as a business model. There were also already a couple established players in the US which did exactly as Manufactum now does….sell an image. I too love the products in the catalog and the stories associated with each product are what get you hooked in. Unfortunately, a lot of this charm disappears when you get to the store in Chilehaus. I have to agree with another reviewer that it’s really bad form to have broken items on display. I have too caught this on multiple occassions. Further, the place is not set up well and you can’t “wander” around well. It’s usually full of people and it’s just annoying to go in there. In theory, the place is great. They do really need to work on making the “experience” though just as good in the store as they do in the catalog. Here they have a ways to go.

J. Petermann used to actually have the coolest store right next to Penn Station in Manhattan where the Banana Republic now is. I loved going there. Somehow their retail concept never caught on and they went back to being available only via catalog I believe.
