Surrey Street market is a brilliant outdoor market which has loads of different stalls and the pitchers are all incredibly lively. I would recommend it to anyone who loves their fruit and veg. An overall decent place to go to for bargain
This is one of the few markets I know that still have the ‘haggling’ atmosphere. You get the men shouting out their deals about fruit and vegetables, you have younger people selling music and the like, it is a great busy, colourful place to have a stroll down and pick up some amazing bargains on the way. The quality is not always perfect but I have never had something that I was disappointed with, and you can not go wrong with buying vegetables that you are going to eat in the next 24 hours. I think we should all aim to shop from our local markets from time to time to keep the local community and local business u and running.
Surrey Street markets never fails to amaze me. I think so many of us have got used to paying supermarket prices, that when we find time to go to a proper fruit and veg market, we’re floored by how little they want for some things.
You’ll be struggling under the weight of the bag of goodies some rough-edged market worker has just handed you, and wondering if you quite heard him right when he asked for something just a shade under two pounds.
As for the quality, it very much depends on which stall you pick, and whether you’re buying in or out of season. But most stalls are pick-your-own, so you can have a rummage and avoid the bruised or soft stuff. I find the market veg doesn’t last as long in the fridge as shop-bought, but, actually, I find this oddly comforting - it perhaps means it’s not been doused in chemicals, and that fact alone is worth the walk down into town to stock up.
Of course, it’s busy, and it’s smelly, but then, let’s face it, it’s not a walk in the park freewheeling a trolley round Tescos, either. In these credit-crunch times, I think there’s a lot to be said for taking a different approach, and we in Croydon are very lucky to have this on our doorsteps.
If you can, visit close to the end of day when the stalls are packing up for uber cheap fruit to make lush smoothies with. I find the market reasonably priced at any time of day and you can buy your vegetables as well as stocking up on Batteries and washing up liquid. Along the market strip you will also find cafes pubs and even the odd record store. There are also a couple of stalls cooking fresh exotic cusine to order such as cantonese and west indian.
The Surrey Street Market is smack in the middle of Croydon and it brings something different and unique to the already booming area. There are lots of different stalls where you can buy fruits and vegs from. The market is open almost every day, don’t think it’s open on Sundays. We tend to spend quite a bit of money on food there but it is quite cheap and well worth it. We simply love the market and the value for money is great. Explore Surrey Street Market the next time you are in Croydon.
