Very poor service. Very average food. Go to Shilpa for your South Indian fix.
Having already visited the Twickenham Sagar, I went here with a vegetarian friend.
As with my experience in Twickenham, I found that this was a fantastic restaurant with wholesome food of a very good quality.
The meal was very affordable. I had the thali (a selection of different dishes served in small bowls on a plate),which I had not had before, but would recommend as it was very tasty and nice to try the different options.
I would say that I prefer this restaurant as it is bigger and airier as there is more light and therefore the Decor, whilst simular to Twickenham is more appealing.
Went here for my birthday as I'd been before and really enjoyed it. I'm not a vegetarian, and to be honest I'd very rarely order a vegetarian meal in a restaurant, but the taste and quality of the meals here means you don't miss the meat!
Perfect meals, and perfect service. The talis and dosas are excellent! Maybe a tiny bit pricey but worth it, would definitely go again.
As a South Indian myself, I'm terribly picky about South Indian food. I normally prefer the spicier 'Chennai Dosai' but I have to say this Udupi style restaurant stands out and is definitely very well suited to English tastes as well as to more spiritually minded people who normally steer clear of really spicy food.
The lunch thali is superb value for money and every item is immaculately cooked.
A word about the staff- they are not unfriendly at all, but respectful. This is the older tradition of Indian catering and is not in keeping with the street ambience of Hammersmith. A middle aged South Indian like myself can see that the staff are actually very good and well trained- 'devo athithi bhava'- the guest is God, in Sanskrit, is their ethos. However, young English people would expect a more informal smiling sort of service. Still, since the Udupi chain has a sort of 'Spiritual' ethos and since the food is very well prepared and 'pure' (sattvic) one can say the respectful service is in line with the branding. The decor too is above and beyond what one might expect from the pricing.
Ultimately, food is about health and well being. You can't go wrong eating at Sagar. It more than keeps up the Udupi image and tradition.

I really enjoyed the lunch special here. The staff were friendly while I was there & the lunch special was totally filling for £3.50
It is all vegitarian so if you don't mind lacking meat & have veggies in your party, this is the perfect place to have an inexpensive meal that will leave you stuffed or take lunch away though you'll need a nap afterwards!

A great vegetarian Indian restaurant. Often visit here for a quick dinner and their lunch offers (5.25 for starter and thali or 3.50 for a curry lunchbox) are amazing value for money. I'm a particular fan of their samosas and dhosas. Great service, great value, great food.
For me, this is a great place to get a fast dinner before shooting off to my next destination. The dhosas are quite tasty, the service quick and friendly, and the surroundings are pleasantly subdued.
I was really happy to find somewhere that does decent South Indian food and I look forward to coming more often.
I think you have to be a fan of Southern Indian food in order to really appreciate Sagar. I have been to one or two similar places and always left feeling as if I made the wrong choice.
I have never been to India and are therefore unable to judge quite how authentic this place is (apparently a lot, according to our friends' friends). I also don't know what to expect from puri, dhosa and uthappam ... the menu offers only very basic descriptions while the staff offer absolutely no guidance!
Excellent if you are feeling adventurous and safe as it's all veggie - ie no danger of being served sweet and sour offal ... the fact that it's vegetables only also accounts for prices that seem cheap at first sight.
We went in a group of four and all ordered different dishes, everyone opting for something they had never tried before. They didn't actually taste all that different which was a bit of a disappointment.
This place is excellent for novelty value - I have certainly never been served a dish as massive as these "pancakes", crispy creations made from lentil. I have also never been able to take a photograph from within my food - you can admire the result above.
I have a vegetarian friend who is a big fan of Kerala - she is about the only reason I would return. There is such a great choice of Indian restaurants in London with similarly good, if not better, food - and with much friendlier service. The staff really let the place down, they were as cold and unfriendly as the decor.
Lovely vegetarian Indian restaurant in Hammersmith. It can be slightly hit-and-miss, but I highly recommend the bhindi bhaji (I’ve definitely typo’d this, OK), beautiful fresh Okra in warm south Indian spices. The garlic and lemon rice is lovely too; a little bit disappointed with the Kulfi we had but it’s a really pleasant change to the usual cheap-chicken Indian restaurants scattered around London.
Service not amazing, but friendly-under-duress.
A very nice vegetarian curry house. Even if you’re not a particular fan of vegetarian food, I recommend it, as the food is very nicely prepared, and they specialise in dosa which are not always easy to find elsewhere.
Just a small caveat: they don’t always make explicit on the menu exactly how hot the dishes are likely to be; that’s fine if you like your food hot (I do), but if you’re a bit more sensitive to chilli then you might want to check with the waiting staff (who can be a little stand-offish, unfortunately) before ordering.
Have not been to Sagar for a couple of years. We stumbled over it by accident and thought it was great. Lovely clean crisp flavoursome food, outstanding breads, superb panneers (sp.) and all at a good price. If you love Indian food and can cope without bland pieces of chicken this place will suit you.
A wonderful place - interesting Ikea meets Monsoon interior. I was delighted that one has now opened in Percy St, central london. Ive always found biryianis to be a bit dull but here its just one amazing flavour after another. They need to make their chai tea more chai instead of tetleys but otherwise always a great meal.
Sagar is a complete vegetarian restaurant located in hammersmith. It mainly specialises in dishes from south india (dosa etc). It is a quite nice restaurant although it is cramped as the owners have tried to squeze in a one or two more tabels. So if there are kids in the place and they are running around then it may bother someone. The service is ok, although i would expcet a bit more to be honest. But being a vegetarian and a fan of south indian food we tend to ignore this and go there quite often. We typically go there in weekdays and its much quiter. Despite of the fact that its a completely vegetarian restaurant, everytime i have been there i have seen more british people eating there than the indian. this is really a credit to the restaurant that they can attract non-vegetarian persons regularly and quite high numbers. Definately recommended.
This is an absolutely excellent South Indian vegetarian restaurant. The lunchtime special is a real steal, at £4.50 for a big selection dishes – it even includes dosas, poppadoms and deserts! I’m not actually a veggie but I go there once a week a least and can never finish all the food. The waiters are really friendly and efficient. Anyway I would wholeheartedly recommend it: the portions are so big that everywhere else seems disappointing; it’s really refreshing to go to a restaurant where the aim’s to give you value for money, not overcharge you. PS. if you get the lunchtime special to takeaway it’s only £3.75, which is just stupidly cheap!
South Indian Restaurant, with a great menu selection. Dosa and traditional idlis are good, if a little bit toned down for western palate. Good value if you are careful, but can be quite expensive if you are not.
Fantastic Southern Indian and vegetarian restaurant which makes the most divine dosas! These rice 'pancakes’ are gorgeous, though they do serve other dishes as well. We love eating here and are spoilt for choice - there are so many excellent meals on the menu! Everything looks and tastes delicious. Friendly service, which always adds to the pleasure. Highly recommended.
