Crown Fisheries

As a first time visitor to Leeds from the US I found Crown by accident.  What a wonderful treat and delicious food.  The fish batter was light and not at all oily.  All of the food was beautifully cooked, fresh and delicious.  I wish I lived in Leeds so that I could have food from Crown Fisheries every day. 

This place deserves four stars for its fishcake butty - 'cake in a bun’, as it is known to true northerners. I was going to give it five, but then remembered that this delicacy is usually just a LITTLE light on the fish from this very fine establishment. However everything else about it is so excellent - the batter crisp, the potato delicious, fluffy, well-cooked, the teacake light and well-buttered - that four stars is certainly the absolute rock-bottom minimum. Or perhaps four and a half.

Crown’s fish fillets are also excellent but the cake in a bun is in my view their piece de resistance. Their chips are well-flavoured from good potatoes, but, like most chip shop chips, rather limp and greasy. Some people appreciate this style, but I prefer an American style fry. Still, Crown’s are masters of the ancient art of fish-frying.
