HMV has gone from bad to worse over the last few years – I know they’re looking shakey generally, but I can’t help thinking they’ve got themselves to blame. A music shop that gradually sells less and less music is never going to survive. That said, I’ve picked up some great bits of vinyl at this HMV over the years, and the staff are a great deal more helpful than at a couple of others I’ve been to.
Massive store! Staff were very friendly and super helpful. One member of staff stayed with me for half an hour looking for what i needed. Big thumbs UP!!!
Mahussive HMV! I love HMV anyway, but I particularly liked this one. Sadly we didn't have time to mooch about properly, although we did get some DVDs and a couple of CDs (Queen Greatest Hits I&II anyone? You should be).
No long queues, even on a Saturday during a Bank Holiday weekend, plenty of tills open, good layout - gets 5 stars from me : )
Heh heh. I particularly like the quote from below “Hello? 1993? Are you still there?”. HMV does feel very 1993 and i must admit, popping in today got my a bit nostalgic. It hasn’t changed a bit!
I got my DVD box set of the inbetweeners and the staff were friendly. Shame, I think we all know they will be going under soon….
Hello, 1993 HMV? Are you still there? I have no idea if this place is still open since I last visited in (yes) 1993! I remember all manner of UK singles and UK-only releases, except here, they didn’t have the “UK only” stickers! Sweet! And everything had this scripty L thingey next to the price, that made the records seem extra English!
Huge selection! Great location!
Backpacking around Europe with a cassette player with Auto-Reverse (nice for those no-hands side changes!) I was really stylin’ and wowing the Euros. Well, not really. Most people had moved to CDs by then…not me! So HMV’s huge selection of cassettes and “cassingles” were my ticket to aural freedom! I think I picked up a 3-song single of Ride’s “Leave Them All Behind”, which became my Anthem for my six-week European backpack tour. I also left with the Sunday’s “Blind” album, another purely English treasure from the early 90’s!
This is a massive HMV with four floors of music, DVDs and games. It must have one of the biggest selections of CDs in London and also has a good selection of vinyl and CD singles. They have offers on all the time so it’s a good place to pick up a couple of cheap CDs or DVDs. They have events on all the time so you can often pop in to find a band performing or something else going on. While it doesn’t have the charm of some of the independent music stores in London there’s no disputing the great selection available.
Hmv is a huge store set over 4 floors. It has all your music, movie and even gaming needs under one roof. Can find soem good bargains during sale times!
An absolutely massive store covering 4 floors. This has to be the biggest record store ive ever been in. Over recent years they reduced the size of the vinyl section which is a shame, but since i don’t collect anymore i don’t suppose it matters. Anyway the ground floor is covered with the usual popular cds and video game and ipod etc whereas the 1st floor is DVDs(i very large kungfu selection=)). Top floor is classical and jazz where as the basement is full of instruments with a very big synth selection which you don’t normally see.
If your a music enthusiast then this is a must stop…even if you an underground music lover. Although try to avoid weekends as its choca-block.
Oxford Street HMV is probably the best place to go shopping for music in London.
The store is absolutely massive with a huge range of music/DVDs/merchandise to choose from.
This HMV also plays host to special events, such as signings and live performances by various artists so it is worth checking on the online website to see if there’s anyone worth seeing.
The store is more expensive than the website, so I would suggest that if you know what you want, just order it via HMV online.
However, this HMV is great for browsing or if you prefer to shop in store.
The thing I like about HMV is that it’s got something for everyone, even stuff you remember about your childhood, right there on the shelf. I personally have grown fond of this store because of it’s game launches in the middle of the night. I went to the World of Warcraft - Burning Crusade expansion launch and it was a sight to believe…. it’s great that they do that in their own stores in the middle of the night. This store is quite big like everyone else said already and you can bag a few good bargains! Remember to get the rewards card!
HMV to me is a waste of time. If I want a DVD, movie or video game I would go to Amazon or another online retailer. High Street stores like this will gradually die out especially with the way our economy is going now. The only way for them to fight back is to compete with the online retailers in terms of price. Browsing for movies or music is so much easier on Amazon than in a shop. Although the outlet in Oxford Street is impressive, it has no appeal to me. Virgin Mega Store is just around the corner from this outlet.
HMV has really improved as far as my expectations are concerned. I used to find that HMV was over-priced and that it was possible to obtain far better deals online… Play.com, amazon, etc.
This is one of the best HMV’s in UK as it is in the centre, there selection of products is superior to other branches, the staff are very helpful and knowledgable and I find that the layout of the shop is perfect.
The sales in store are excellent and some prices cannot be matched, even online…
HMV online is an excellent site, the prices are a little cheaper, due to the fact that they are based in Jersey and so due not pay VAT (I think)... If you are online, have a look and you might find a bargain. Also, whether you spend £1 or £100, delivery is FREE…
Very good shop, full of bargains, with a great selection of dvd boxsets on the first floor and expensive foreign movies. My advice though, before buying, would be to head down to Fopp at Cambridge Circus, since HMV own fopp and use it as a loss leader. Loads of dvds in Fopp for £2 at the moment. Good selection of rare Kinks cds in HMV including a boxset that looks rather good value for money.
This HMV is HUGE! I have always found everything that I want to buy in there and usually for a pretty good price.
Everything is clearly labelled so you can find your way around the store quite easily.
The staff tend to be too busy serving at the tills to be around to help you so it can be difficult to get directions or assistance if you need it.
This store really does have everything, from rare music to the older film which you can’t get hold of in other stores. Loads of space, makes this a great vist.
Music, film, gaming and gadget fans steer clear unless you are willing to part with your cash, cause HMV has everything your heart could desire! I tend to do most of my media shopping online but when im near Oxford street I can’t resist popping in just to browse! The store is massive, it totally dwarfs anything we have back home In South Africa, so it may even be worth checking out as a tourist attraction. Price wise its pretty good, you can find deals in-store that you may not find online (Visa-versa applies too though).
This HMV is one of the biggest stores on Oxford Street, it stocks everything from books to cd’s to dvd’s and games. You could spend hours browsing the aisles of the store and also pick up some nice presents and gifts.
This HMV is the biggest one i have ever been too , it is huge! They have a every cd you could possible want.HMV sell cds, dvd, games and magazines and t shirts. They always seem to have every artists cd in this shop. They have specialists areas to.Upstairs are all the dvds which is also huge , whenever HMV have a sale on i make sure i visit the Oxford street store as they have different stuff in the sale and they always have stock. They is a lot of staff which is needed of course , they are very friendly and can help you find something you want on there stock computers.
Massive shop, if they haven’t got it, forget it, sections on all types of music from classical to metal, every game system catered for, most dvd’s big section on non-english ones too.
The store is on a few floors with escalotors and lifts, the staff are more than helpful, and there are always enough tills open so the queues are brief.
Absolutely huge selection and very knowledgable staff. I went in not remembering the name of the artist, only the type of music and they were able to find it for me. They also had some great DVD’s on sale for £5 each. When everyone else was sold out, they had some Wiis left. This is a fantastic shop and the staff are part of what makes it fantastic. I really recommend it!
