My favourite pub I have ever been to. The bar staff are chatty and friendly, the beer selection has something for everyone (they specialise in Real Ale, and Belgian beers), and the punters are always happy to have a bit of a chat whilst you wait for your drinks at the bar, or share a table if no others are free.
The pub gets a little busy on both Football and Rugby match days, but again, home and away fans mix with no trouble.
The pub itself is run by the owners of the local Allgates Brewery around the corner, so expect to have their new ales available here. You have the choice of the basic lagers (Fosters, Stella, Carling), Real Ale (Regulars are Hydes Black, one of the Allgates Milds, plus a selection of random others), Belgian beers (Frulli, and the recently added Brugse Zot), Staropramen from the good ol' Czech Republic, and the German beauty that is Schneiderweiss.
There are also bottled beers, or "alcopops", along with the usual suspects with the spirits.
If you're in town and fancy a drink in a friendly atmosphere, get down to The Anvil!

The best boozer in Wigan by far. I always visit this pub during the Wigan beerfest (currently on in March at Robin Park Sports Centre - the Anvil puts on a free bus from the pub to the venue), and the real ale / foreign beer selections are always impressive and well kept.
A must for real ale fans and those who respect decent, well-run pubs.

A truely exceptional boozer. I will be remembering this one if I am going back to Wigan again. A CAMRA award winning pub, The Anvil appealed to me and being an away fan alone after the game at the JJB Stadium I stepped in with trepidation. It was full with Wigan fans watching the late Saturday kick off English Premier League game.
I got a warm welcome at the bar and the most amazing beer selection I have seen on draft in 2009. There was Hydes Bitter, four guest real ales, Hydes Black (a sort of Gunniness type stout) all available for under £2 a pint. There was also Stella, Guinness amongst the usual suspects and then Fruli, Klug pilsner, St. Louis Kriek, Leffe, Staropramen and another speciality beer for reasonable prices.
I could not recommend this place higher even though I was just a passing visitor.

The jewel in Wigan’s pub crown, The Anvil is without doubt the best pub in Wigan town centre. The pub offers a range of cask ales and continental lagers; it is a regular winner of the Wigan Camra pub of the season / pub of the year awards. The atmosphere is friendly and the staff are cheerful. The pub is very popular with football fans on match days with home and away fans mixing well and sharing their love of good beer. The Anvil is a 2 minute walk from the both train stations and is next to the bus station.
