Awesome pub!

Great selection of drinks, great food… 2 for 5 pound burgers on a Monday and Tuesday and a relaxed ‘beatnix/poets’ atmosphere.

A very enjoyable venue with lashings of personality, original artwork and a great place to meet up with friends for a talk (except when they have music on!).

Review of The Goldhawk Pub from 17 June 2011

I headed over here for a friend's birthday, and it was a good walk from Hammersmith station which didn't take too long, and the pub itself isn't too far from Westfield either but just far enough away that it wasn't too busy! Though, it was a Wednesday evening so it probably wouldn't be anyway.

Even though the outside looks a bit dreary, inside it's a lovely place, big open bar and lots of wooden tables with comfy benches and chairs. After dumping my coat on one of them, I went to get a drink and was happy to find an intriguing selection. I decided I'd start at one end of the taps with a Vedett - a Belgian beer I hadn't heard of, and work my way along throughout the course of the evening. I was a bit shocked at the price - £4 for a pint, which is twice as much as I usually pay (at the student bar!). It was a good pint though and I wouldn't regret it - my next pint I moved to the next tap, but it wasn't as good so rather than keep trying different ones I just stuck with the Vedett from then on!

Anyway, enough about the beer, except for one last point to say I was a tad disappointed that their ale pumps weren't working - I wasn't sure exactly why as it was second hand from one of my friends but ales were off that night!

Food was great, a few beers later we ordered, their menu was good and they had a tapas style selection on the left hand side of it. About 12 dishes on there and you could pick 3 for £11. It was tempting, but in the end I chose the burger, as did most of the rest of us. It was a 'steak burger' with bacon, cheese and red onion marmalade, chips and coleslaw. The burger was cooked very well, tasty and delicious. Coleslaw was home made with savoy cabbage rather than the usual white stuff that inhabits mum-made coleslaw. Chips hot and crisp on the outside, soft on the inside (like an armadillo) which is just what you want. But the highlight was their fantastic red onion marmalade. Actual heaven, especially when dipped by chips. They'd smothered lots of it inside the burger so it was dripping out and though there was lots, I'd have happily eaten a bowlful of the stuff! Brilliant food, and didn't take them ages either.

We considered pudding, they had some interesting choices including a lemon meringue cheesecake and sticky toffee pudding. I love a good sticky toffee pudding and I was up for one but unfortunately they'd stopped taking orders by the time we went to the bar for food round 2! Pity, but just means I'll have to go there again for another chance. What a shame...

£2 a pint?! Chris, where is this awesome bar and do they let old ladies in?

  • sarahdrinkwater, 17 June 2011:

PS - this pub is great, I particularly like all the cool band posters

  • Chris Gray, 17 June 2011:

Student Union at Imperial College - I'm sure they do. Why, do you know any? ;)
And I was very impressed with the place, it just looks great inside. I couldn't believe it was as empty as it was, though £4 a pint made my wallet cry.

  • sarahdrinkwater, 17 June 2011:

This old lady misses her student union days, especially when I walk past UCL's bar now and it's 37 times better than the scabby shanthouse it was back in the 1830's when I was there! Is Imperial's bar the cheapest in London, do you think?

  • Chris Gray, 17 June 2011:

Hmm, our student paper did a feature comparing them. Think UCL was about the same actually, and King's isn't too bad! Plus you aren't old!

  • sarahdrinkwater, 17 June 2011:

Flattery will get you everywhere, Chris, including the Qype Summer Party guestlist... I always liked King's because they had the club with the amazing Thames views!

  • Chris Gray, 17 June 2011:

Yeh, it's an alright night out, though I'm not supposed to admit that, being from IC and all... and unfortunately I've got an exam on the Friday (a quite important one) so I don't think I could live with myself if I tried to get on the guest list for it which is very sad! :(

  • sarahdrinkwater, 17 June 2011:

Well, an exam is the very best reason to miss it. Good luck & don't worry, we're planning a few equally brilliant parties for later on....!

  • Chris Gray, 18 June 2011:

Thanks! Sad to miss it, it sounds amazing and I hope it's a good night! And ace, I'll keep an eye out :)

The Goldhawk pub is a proper pub, despite the slightly dodgy paintings of Bob Marley and Bob Dylan. Is there a fondess for people called Bob? Do they have an oil painting of Bob Holness in the ladies' toilets?

Anyway, this pub is a fine place to sit and slurp real ale. I've been a couple of times (not in quick succession, granted) and it seems they adopt the guest ale policy, which means you can get some good beer in you without ever being one of those boring one-brand people.

Aside from the boons of free WiFi, comfy sofas, friendly staff and big wooden tables to slouch on, the food here is worth noting.

I ordered a beef and ale pie (the best kind of pie) which came with cabbage and mash. I'm thrilled to say that the pastry and mash had an impressive amount of butter contained within, which makes for glorious comfort grub.

I believe that there's been various films shot inside the Goldhawk, but I can't remember which ones they were and don't really care. What I do care about is that this is a really decent and unpretentious pub.

Well worth popping in.

This local is an incredibly comfy spot on Goldhawk Road. Eclectic yet laid back and welcoming decor makes it very easy to relax with a drink or nibble. The food is more hit than miss, and while the staff can be a bit slow, they are genial. I would recommend the nachos with a nice strong cider and good lounge on one of the many couches to while away a wet afternoon, and the small patio is great for sunny days. The Sunday roast and pub quiz are not to be missed. Although there are pubs closer to my home, I will go out of my way to enjoy this spot.

Leffe and Frulli on tap: WIN WIN. Really great pub, surviving sister to the now dead Eagle (Askew Road) that used to be so great. Only missing treat is a garden. There is an outside bit, but it is out the front.
Reasonably priced food, great atmosphere. Disagree that it is full of trendy yuppies. You get all sorts at this pub and with a good combo of soft and hard seating you can feel right at home. They do a fun Sunday pub quiz.

Good for chats with friends, cosy days, cosy evenings and when you just somewhere good to go and get hammered.

NB: I went here recently (Aug 09), worst sunday roast I have had in AGES. BAD BAD BAD. Otherwise, its still good!

It’s one of those Mitchells and Butlers 'unique’ London pubs, with heavy floral wallpaper and fabrics, big statement lampshades, lots of arty handwriting on blackboards, Fruili, and a menu that includes a lot of gourmet burgers and handcut chips.

Having said that it’s a nice atmosphere, it’s clearly cared for by the owner, there are board games if you’re so inclined and a good selection of drinks. The food is better than it used to be, although when we visted yesterday the bread on the vegetarian sharing platter was moudly. Bar staff’s response: 'ooh, sorry about that. Get a shot of vodka or something’. Literally. Hence the star knocked off.

Pretty decent pub if you’re down that end of town. They (used to?) run a mean pub quiz every week and we were regular(winner)s. The food was pretty good - sort of fusion mediterranean with nice flat bread sharers, and a pretty decent roast. As mentioned, it’s great that they have fruli (fruity refreshing Belgian beer) and Leffe beers, and a few tables out the front for the smokers. It’s quite large but still cosy and the staff can be a little touch and go but in general I’ve always had a pretty good experience here - certainly worth the walk if you’re in Shepherd’s Bush.

Great local… it has a fresh young crowd and is newly renovated. But as the general rule goes, if you don’t expect too much, than you are never disappointed!

A pretty standard gastro-grotto type pub. Great pub quiz on a sunday, pretty rubbish food, decent drink range and a bizarrely inefficient bunch of confused but still likeable staff - but yet, still a decent boozer, and much better than most options on the goldhawk road. Has a bit of competition Queen adelaide and the defectors, so should probably have a bit of a rethink so it don’t get too yawnsome…

A fantastic pub with a wide range of drinks, and good reasonably priced food. Clientele is mostly trendy yuppies but avoids the pretentious atmosphere of many other posh places.

If the constant entertainment (Tuesdays and Thursdays are open mic nights, Sundays are pub quiz nights) isn’t enough, then a wide range of board games - Scrabble and the like - is also available to help pass the time away. Handy on a Saturday night in a lull in the conversation.

It’s my local and you can’t say better than that.

A relaxed local pub, lots of comfy couches and a pretty good selection of beer. The seating is nice as it allows for some cozy alcoves as well as larger tables and areas for groups. Outdoor seating is also a bonus.

Managed to get there on a live music night, which was mildly hilarious as the band members were probably all about 15. There are few things more funny than watching teenagers try to belt out “Mustang Sally” while forgetting most of the words…

Imagine my delight when finding out that my local was this wonderful pub. The Goldhawk is located on Goldhawk Road (surprise surprise) and in my opinion is the best place for a pint in the area. With Leffe on tap and a range of belgian beers, surprisingly strong ciders and fruity cocktails, there is something for everyone. I have yet to exhaust their drink selection (but I’m willing to give it a go).

They have a variety of food ranging from moroccan style nibbles to good old pub favourites. While away a couple of hours with a game of monopoly or scrabble on the bedouin-esque sofa’s. There is a fantastic roast on offer on a sunday. Also on a sunday, they have the popular quiz - get there early if you want a table.

This pub comes highly recommended, especially if you want a pub that is like an extention of your living room. Check it out.

This used to be my local pub so I have many fond memories of it! They have decently priced drinks and you can get some of the less common beers and ciders here, Belgian Strawberry beer for example. The food was always well prepared and quite delicious, not too pricey either, about £7-8 for a big main and around £5 for a lighter one. The interior is warm and cosy with dining tables as well as plush comfy couches. There is also a sitting area outside for summertime. The staff are always friendly but english is not their first language and there has been order confusion on more than one occasion, it is always resolved without much fuss but it means waiting twice as long. Quiz nights at the Goldhawk are always alot of fun otherwise go on Sunday for a tasty and filling roast.
