I've reviewed the Longlands twice before after dining there. The first time I gave it five stars because it was great and the second time I gave it two stars because it was really disappointing. However we decided to give it another try as they were advertising a new menu and also we were moored on the canal nearby and there was nowhere else to eat within walking distance :-) Anyway on this occasion the food was better than last time. My Chicken Kiev came with jacket potato, salad and soured cream and was pleasant enough. My husband's Cumberland sausage and mash was OK but as a man who loves his sausages he wasn't overly impressed by the quality of the sausage. Service was friendly but slow. The bar has several cask beers and they have music on Monday nights as well as steak nights and pasta nights which offer set meal deals. All in all it was an improvement on our last visit but it doesn't really stand out from the crowd as anything special.

This was a great find! Went on Sunday and had a really lovely Sunday lunch, three courses for £14 (if I remember correctly) which was just fantastic value. We turned up without booking and they managed to fit us in even though the restraunt was obviously very busy. They let us know that there might be a little wait for food as it was so busy, however as it turned out there was no real wait anyway. Great food, lovely surroundings - all obviously newly refurbished including the toilets. Will certainly be going back.

If you want a Sunday lunch that is a cut above your normal carvery offering then the Longlands is for you.
From the outside it looks like your traditional country pub. But step through the doors and it’s been refurbished to the highest standards. But, if you’re sensible, you came for the food and not the decor
The last time I ate at the Longlands I had the roast rib of beef and it was superb. Melt in your mouth tender. And it came with a yorkshire pudding that was pillow like in its dimensions. Others with me had roast lamb which they said, again, was excellent. We went for the two course for £13 which I felt was very good value for the quality of the food. None of us had room for puddings though so I can’t comment on how good they are.
One thing that made us laugh - especially in the run up to Christmas - as you park on the car park the smoking hut, lit up at night, looked very much like somewhere Mary and Joseph would have hung out. It inspired us to break into a chorus of Hark The Herald. I guess you had to be there ;-)

I agree with all of your comments – have never had a bad meal or pint here but for god’s sake don’t serve my food on a piece of Skiddaw slate!!!!!!!
I know what you mean about the slate! Turns hot food instantly cold and looks really unappealing. Fortunately on this occasion the food came on plates :-)
