I used to go here quite a bit, contemporary, clean, but meagre and sometimes overcrowded and rushed. The food is very good but service can let it down so now i use kolkota.

This is Birmingham's best balti restaurant, by far. My wife and I visit regularly. The menu is comprehensive, the staff friendly and helpful, and the place is scrupulously clean. The tables are presented well and the luxury of having a freshly ironed linen napkin doesn't go unnoticed. Fridays and Saturdays are exceptionally busy (as you would expect with a restaurant of such quality) so it is advisable to book. Take your own wine or beer - no charge for corkage, as in some other places. If you want to be made welcome and enjoy a lovely dining experience then the Masalla Merchant is the place to go. There are several complimentary gestures offered throughout your meal, and the big bonus is that it isn't expensive. A very popular restaurant with a reputation to match. I can't praise it highly enough.

I have visited this restaurant a total of three times and the food has been the BEST EVER balti restaurant I have been too. You need to book a table to avoid disappointment and if you don't like to be tightly packed in, then request a central or aisle table as they do tend to pack the tables closely together.

First class service, excellent menu, excellent food, extras included e.g.
complimentary extra starter often served, clean-up tissues after the meal, after dinner
sweets, free brandy or Bailey's after the meal, flower gift for the ladies.
Starter, main meal, sweet all for £15 per head - I think that's a pretty good deal.

Most of the staff are friendly but I think some of them may have their off days (a bit straight-faced when taking your order, or if you are not ready to order when they are............)

The food is good at this restaurant… too bad its NOT child friendly AT ALL… we were the first table in on the night we went (my kids are 6 & 7 and well behaved) we were celebrating my daughters big school achievment. Staff performed basic routines but no smiles and not friendly…. COME ON GUYS!!! You want business??? How about a few thank you’s and smiles? Is it too much too ask? Even my kids said ‘Daddy, I don’t think they like their jobs’! Thank you for the roses… that was the first time we got a smile or a thank you out of the lot of you….. when we were leaving. I know you’re not really bothered about families with kids coming in… I get that BUT its the Moms and Dads that bring in big groups because you were wonderful to their families that make you the money!!!! Cop on guys!!!! I’ll see how I feel about coming again………

Extremely poor. I went with my fiance and his family on a Friday night for a 9pm sitting. We have been to many of the curry houses in stirchley, some of which are fantastic. This is by far the worst I have been to.

The staff were rude and unattentive. They clearly had too many tables for the space. We were crammed in like sardines, there were lots of staff buzzing round bumping into each other and our chairs. Not one of them smilied. The man who took our orders was rude and abrupt. When they missed some papadoms off our order we were told that it was then too late! After asking several times they eventually brought them out.

The food was very very poor, and the menu does not acurately describe it. I will never be visiting this balti restaurant again.

The only reason I have given this one star is to draw attention to how bad it was.

Both myself and my girlfriend have been here a number of times and have always had a good experience.

There is a good variety of dishes and the food is always nicely cooked. The place can be a little busy at times, but this is mostly due to the fact that you can bring your own beer/wine with no corkage charge.

All in all a great Indian meal that's cheaper than most other places if you are going to have a drink as well.

Good, reasonably priced food. Attentive but not over-intrusive staff. Clean. Gets crowded but with all that going for it you can see why.

I really love this place. The food is fantastic and its a resturant rather than a curry house. The menu is great and staff are helpful. It can get very busy though. I often go early or during the week. Its a place you can either get really dressed up for or be casual. You need to book. Deserts are nice and the fab thing is at the end you get loads of free oranges, kids sweets and baileys/brandy … yum. You can take your own drinks and there is a off licence next door. They dont have a high chair but are good with kids. Oh, and the ladies get a rose when you leave. Its really the extras that do it. I got a christmas present when I went one year! Parking at the back, but also road and other car park space around.

The Masalla Merchant is a Bengali, Indian & Tandoori Restaurant in Stirchley, Birmingham.

Contemporary surroundings. Tasty food, more expensive than traditional Balti Houses but good quality.

Attentive service. Our meals have usually been accompanied by a complimentary liqueur, and the ladies are given a real red rose as they leave! nice touch.

Masalla Merchant is very popular and booking is highly recommended. Takeaway Available.
