I only just discovered the sesami in search of a good coffee, I noticed the big ILY sign up on the window and thought I would go in a give it a try, I bought myself a macchiato, made by one of the male staff dressed in the black, and would highly recommend any coffee lovers to go there. They also do a great flat white.

Ignore the negative comments, Sesami is a lovely place! Okay it can be very busy on a weekend - the sign of a popular shop! - but the staff are always friendly, there is a fantastic range of food, and the atmosphere is cheerful. Great to have in Herne Hill.

I used to love this place but unfortunately some of the staff there are very rude. There are far too many staff, they are chaotic and seem to hate eachother (pulling faces, sighing and rolling eyes at eachother). I wouldn't recommend it.

I have been into Sesami a number of times thinking I will give it another chance but today was the last time I will try. The food looks like it's been thrown together by a four year old then left in a sun filled window for a week to wilt. I keep returning thinking that one day I will turn up at the right time to be able to sample  what sits in the perpetual gaps on the counter until I realised the gaps are always there. The over priced coffee seems to be the only consumable item, I guess the price reflects the fact that it takes over 3 staff to take the order, make the order and give me my change while all appearing to be totally bewildered by the process.

surprised by some of the negativity on here. It's true that they can occasionally be disorganised and chaotic in spite of the number of staff they have, but the food is great, and they're a friendly bunch. Even more importantly, the food is great, and very reasonably priced. Strong recommendation to anyone looking for a decent bite to eat - have taken lots of friends there and everyone has always been impressed.

I recently discovered Sesami and ever since I can't stop myself from going back. Its a really nice place if you want to go and have a quick take away, or just have a lovely Panini. I have to say the Panini's are outstanding.

Sesami really caters to my needs. I remember recently, a member of staff saw me coming in, I can never remember her name but she has really nice red hair. she treated me really well and even remembered what I had from my last visit. which made me feel very comfortable. Sesami is becoming like a seconded home to me, I'm their all the time :)

Now I know I can always get a nice fulfilling lunch and a nice hot drink to go with it.

Well I cannot fault this place. Sure, they're disorganised and seem to have a comically huge turnover of staff, but the sandwiches are delicious and very reasonably priced for the ingredients. I can't speak for the coffee as I rarely buy hot drinks there, but the food, I think, is outstanding for the price. I am one of their most regular customers, embarrassingly always asking for my 'usual'. It is an important part of the Herne Hill community and I have learnt to work around their shortfalls (always ask for your bagel to be toasted for good and long).

Frankly, I wouldn't go there again. The coffee was poor and the service non-existent. Waiting at the counter to be served by one of the three or four staff, no one offered a polite 'hello' or asked what I wanted. I finally ordered a cappuccino, paid and waited. I had virtually finished reading my newspaper when the coffee was slammed down on the table. I took the cup back and again no one spoke to me, or smiled - in fact no one smiled at any time. Rubbish.

Having just moved to Herne Hill I'm so happy to have found such a great deli on my doorstep.

The paninis and bagels are delicious, a real life saver when my in-laws decided to pop in for lunch.

I've been in every day since for coffee, by far the best in the area. The staff are very friendly and the service has been quick, Im usually dashing for a train and each time the staff have accommodated to this.

Sesami seems to be a real hub for the local area, they let local businesses leave flyers and I often see the staff chatting to locals and regulars.

Its great to see a neighbourhood deli doing so well and so much for the local community.

God, there are some miserable, self-important gits writing on here...
You get back what you give out. This is a fine little deli and I've never found the service less than completely charming from all concerned. The coffee's good (not outstanding) but the Greek-style baked goodies (savoury and sweet) are really delicious. On top of that, the prepacked products on the shelves cover a wide range and are very fairly priced. This place is a huge asset to the neighbourhood.

Review of Sesami from 31 May 2010

Living locally, I've tried so hard to like Sesami. The last thing I'd want is for it to go out of business, and for a kebab shop to take its place.

But try as I might, they just make far too many mistakes for me to go back. Today was the last straw - I went in for a soup, and had to wait close to ten minutes for my change (they'd run out of coins and someone had to go get some changed elsewhere). While I was leaving, a man who'd been in there longer than I had had to tentatively ask if his panini had finished grilling. The assistant had completely forgotten, and was stood there eating and gossiping with her workmate. I noticed she didn't wash her hands either, after eating her lunch behind the counter, and then handling the man's panini.

This follows a string of bad experiences at Sesami. My first visit, when it first opened, was marred when I got home and realised that the clotted cream I'd bought had expired days ago.

On another episode, I went in for one of their bagels (which are very tasty, I must admit). I asked for salmon, and got mackarel. The woman apologised when she realised, but didn't offer to make me what I'd originally asked for - nor offered a discount or refund. The mackarel bagel was full of bones and I had to throw it away after a few bites.

Recently I went in for a mushroom soup. I took it home and was really disappointed - their other soups are quite nice, but the mushroom soup felt really gritty, as if they hadn't washed the mushrooms before cooking with them. I couldn't finish it, it was like eating dirt.

The other day I went in for a chai tea latte. I noticed they just use a powdered flavouring instead of a syrup (or home-made chai flavouring) which most places do. This powdered chai I can get in Sainsburys! It was the equivalent of being handed a Nescafe when you ordered an espresso.

Today's experience, having to wait for what felt a lifetime, while my soup cooled and the piece of bread went completely cold, is the last time I'll visit Sesami.

I think they really need to lift their game not only in the products they're selling, but also the customer service they're offering. At the moment it is very limited. Only the male owner actually says "hello", "thank-you for visiting", and smiles. The rest of his workers are mardy, sullen-faced people who are going through the motions of their jobs and couldn't give two hoots about pleasing anyone.

I'm amazed you gave them so many chances!

I wouldn't normally, but this cafe is no more than a minute's walk from where I live, and I try and support small, independent businesses as much as I can. After every disastrous visit I've vowed not to return, but inevitably do - out of laziness or generosity, I don't know. Enough is enough though, this is the last straw!

A wonderful shop to have in the neighbourhood. Staff are always very friendly and they make the best coffee in walking distance! The fantastic owner has even added 'flat whites’ to the coffee menu which pleases the New Zealanders and Australians in the neighbourhood. Great bagels - overall has become my weekend brunch local.

This gorgeous little grocers/deli has only been open for a few months but, perfectly situated a few doors down from Herne Hill Station, I hope it’s thriving. I popped in when I was checking out the area as a new place to live and was heartened that this sort of shop would be close by.

Selling a variety of healthy organic groceries along with a good range of vegetarian/vegan foods including tofu and spreads, Sesami is great for grabbing supplies from on the way home from work, and there’s even a cafe/coffee shop element - they sell lovely sandwiches and hot drinks all day long and even have an organic sorbet counter. I can vouch for the blackberry…YUM.
