Bidston Windmill

Located within easy walking distance of the nearby Tam O’Shanter Urban Farm (free car parking spaces in a designated car park) the windmill provides a focal point for walks across the lovely heathland and rocky outcrops of Bidston Hill; providing a vantage point for panoramic views across the River Mersey, to Liverpool and beyond.
With a windmill having been on the site since 1596, the present construction, built in 1793, operated until 1875. Apparently, one of the former millers was killed here - struck by one of the sails after coming out of the door without taking due care. If you look carefuully, you’ll be able to see holes driven into the rock nearby, indicating the location of the original mill which stood, until destoyed by fire, in 1793. The windmill is open (free admission) on the first Sunday of each month, between 2:00pm and 4:00pm, but isn’t suitable for claustrophobics or anyone with difficulty climbing steep ladders and steps. Explore the exposed sandstone ridge for evidence of graffiti going back to the early 1800s.
