3 reviews of The Woodlands Tavern in English
Woodlands Tavern is a country pub in the hills between Newport and Usk in South Wales. It's a beautiful bit of countryside.
I don't know what the pub half of this place is like but eating there last Saturday lunchtime was a pleasant surprise.
I had a perfectly cooked lemon sole - whole - though I was asked whether I would like it filleted. My companions had a huge crab and prawn salad, and a smoked salmon and Waldorf salad.
The rest of the menu looked good too, ranging from standard pub fare like ham egg and chips through to a long list of specials including - on our visit - beef stroganoff, the lemon sole I mentioned above, and bass.
Didn't have the appetite for dessert, but coffee was good too.
Whenever I’m in the area I will try to eat at the Woodlands. Half pub, half laid back restaurant the woodlands does not quite blend the two areas into a complete whole however the restaurant is very, very good. The menu is varied with a mix of tarditional pub favorites and more exotic fare such as boar, venison or duck. The cooking is some of the best in the area and booking is essential. Service is bright and enthusiastic and a visit to the woodlands in a very worthwhile experience.
The Woodlands Tavern is in a beautiful setting surrounded by countryside and within Wentwood forest which is well known for walking and mountain biking. The tavern is a great place because it manages to combine a traditional country pub with a top notch restaurant,so you can choose to just relax whilst having a drink in the bar or have a delicious meal.
All meals are home cooked and really nice with a lot of local produce on the menu, there is always a good choice of dishes from steaks to stuffed trout and they also have a specials board.Deserts are sooo good especially the profiteroles they are yummy!!!
Sunday lunches are excellent and very good value but book early as they are very popular with the locals.
Overall the Woodlands Tavern is a lovely restaurant and ideal for family get together or an intimate meal for two.
