Compliment Bodilklarskov (07-06-2008) 5

Den Gamle By (The Old Town) is the oldest open air town environment museum in the World and it will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2009. The houses have been collected from all over Denmark, taken apart and reassembled in this lovely museum. There are houses belonging to all classes of society + shops, post office etc. Wandering around the cobbled streets you find yourself travelling back in time. You can enter many of the houses and meet the ‘residents’, who are happy to have a chat and have you taste some of their food. There is a horse drawn carriage which can take you around but it is definitely not too big to walk.
There are different gardens containing medicinal plants, flowers and vegetables and at the gardener’s you can even buy some to take home.
There is a house where you can enjoy your own picnic or you can go to Simonsens have where they serve a good selection of danish open sandwiches, hot dishes and lovely homemade cakes. The bakery is also lovely and you can buy all sorts of traditional and delicious things to take home.
At Christmas (from mid November through December) Den Gamle By holds its traditional Christmas market with stalls selling a range of things from gift items like handmade arts and crafts to mulled wine, traditional cakes and æbleskiver (type of ball-shaped waffle served with jam and icing sugar). It is one of the busiest times of year and a great place to soak up the special atmosphere of a Danish Christmas.
Any time a year there are things to see and special events like beer brewing take place. This is a very special place and definitely worth a visit.
