Still one of Leicesters hidden treasures! Cannot stress enough how gorgeous the food is. Don't expect samosa's and poppadoms this is the place to go to try something new! Restaurant can get very busy so booking is advisable.

The food was quite bad. We had a fish curry which was bland and tasted a bit old. Waiters wearing hats do not a good meal make (customers want good food, not over fashionable waiters)

The best South Indian restaurant I’ve been to in the UK. Every dish was delicious and beautifully presented; everything featuring eggs was a particular highlight. The dhosas are wonderfully gigantic. I had the crab curry, including shell-smashing implements, which was enormous fun but also insanely messy. Fantastic evening.

Kayal has amazing Indian food, but a different taste! The staff explained it as south Indian dishes and each and every dish tasted was amazing. As we went in a group of four, we ordered a variety of dishes and tasted atleast 8 dishes. I would recommend their ‘Kallappam’ and ‘Meen Porichathu’ the most. Kayal special cocktail ‘Jamuna vismayam’ was also amazing. Polite and friendly staff is another attraction of Kayal. Recommend this more than any other in town.

Stunning, stunning food. Not your usual tikka masalas, jalfrezis, bhunas etc – really unusual but absolutely gorgeous curries full of beautiful flavours. My husband had the Tilapia which just melted in your mouth. I had the Mutton Biryani and the flavours were to die for! Lovely atmosphere in the restaurant. We have taken several friends and family there and they all love it. One friend, who has lived in several countries and tried Indian restaurants out everywhere, said it was the best Indian he’d ever been to.

Would highly, highly recommend to anyone!!

Great authentic flavours; wonderful decoration, great music; very smiley service; tremendous value.i like kayal sadya (thali) (served as a three course meal starting with the soup. followed by neatly arranged little bowls of either non-vegetarian/vegetarian curries, side dishes, bread.and rice along the circumference in a large plate and the dessert as a final course which is complete all-in-one package meal that’s anywhere) i love this restaurant.

Quite simply an amazing curry experience.

Had the Naranga Choru rice, Kozhi Kurumulagu chicken and delicious Chapathi (first time I have had this) and they combined to produce the best curry I can remember having in many many a year.

Highly recommended……essential really. Just…..Wow!

Motivated by the positive reviews we decided to visit kayal Leicester Restaurant during our stay in Leicester. We drove past it three times, since it is so inconspicuous, between all the other take-aways, restaurants and bars. However, the friendly staff, the big portions of wonderful food and the more than reasonable prices left us thoroughly impressed. We will definitely return,...

As ever, a wonderful meal at kayal Leicester. Good to catch up with other regulars and enjoy friendly banter. We have over the last two years visited the restaurant, with friends and relatives visiting us from as far afield as Australia, Belgium and Ireland, all want kayal to open a restaurant there as they...super……………….

Wow. Visited tonight for a quick curry, and didn't realize it was south indian cuisine until I got to the door. I was in Kerala earlier this year, and loved the food, so I scanned the menu with anticipation.

I was close to going for the fish but opted for the thali instead. The fish soup starter was really tasty, as was the main thali with a good selection of flavors. The desert was an interesting surprise which reminded me of some of the deserts I'd had in India, but I didn't recognize it...

Certainly a good place to try of you're tired of the usual...

Awesome 5* from me...

South Indian food that really is very different from your average curry house. Everyone who likes curry should try this place and everyone who doesn't should too. The flavours in the food are much more subtle and in some cases unexpected. It's all good though and the staff are very helpful. Not quite as much food on the plate as a typical Indian but there's still enough. The whole experience is great and good value for money. I'm told the sister restaurant in Nottingham is just as good too.

Review of Kayal from 7 December 2009

Visited this place on Sunday evening. Great service and incredible food! This place is fantastic.

I'm not a hug fan of "indian restaurants" as they are all pretty much of a muchness. The same old curries, tandoori's and Bhuna's, but this place is different. It's Suthern Indian food. Plenty of coconut and fish. I had Kappayum Meenum, a sort of fish curry served with cassava, a kind of mashed root vegetable. It was seriously one of the best things I have eaten for a very long time. We weren't really sure of what to eat, but the waiter explained everything and made a few suggestions based on what we liked. He even warned us about the 'standard' heat of some of the dishes and asked us if we wanted it made with more or less chilli.

All in all it was a great meal and I will definitely be back. Excellent!
