We were on “Top of the Rock” in May this year. We found some discount vouchers when we did the Circle Line Cruise so we decided to give it a try mainly because the opening hours are much longer than the ones at the Empire State Building. Top of the Rock is open until 11:30 pm. We came late and there was no line so no waiting time. Staff were all very friendly and even the security check was not as bad as it usually is in such places. From ticket purchase to the Top it took us less than 10 minutes. We were taken up in an elevator that has a special multimedia running on its ceiling so you already get excited when you’re going up. The view from the top is stunning. For photographers it’s even nicer than on the Empire because there are a lot more options to put the camera on posts and pillars which is not possible at the Empire State Building. Plus – of course – from the Rockefeller Building you are able to see the beautiful ESB which is nicely illuminated at night. The price is fair, logistics and service are perfect (a photo service is also available so you can get yourself a photo with you and the skyline in the background).

To go this place instead of going to Empire State building could be a very good option, you almost don’t have to wait on the queue, and the views are almost equal, even more, you have views of the Empire State and Central Park at the same time ;)

I couldn't ever tell a first-timer not to go up the Empire State Building but the Top of the Rock is far and away the best place to experience the sheer size and scale of NYC. Spectacular views include the Chrysler Building, Central Park and the ESB, and you can dawdle all you like to enjoy it from every angle.

If your thinking of going up the empire state building, don't bother. This is better! Why? - You can see central park, it's not as busy, you can see the empire state & a 360 degree view at the top is just better!

It was awesome! We got tickets to go up in the morning and evening. During the day the view of the park was spectacular. The evening viewing was even better, the whole city lit up- it was really cool. The elevator to the top seemed to go really fast. You also got a good view of the empire estate to take good photographs.

This is a truly AWESOME way to view New York. Even on a clear weekend day we only had to queue for around 15 minutes (a walk in the park compared with the Empire State, I'm told) and once tickets were acquired, were ushered straight through to the lifts.
The 'elevators' going up are an experience in themselves. I'm a bit of a claustrophobic, but was able despite this to enjoy the very quick ascent, during which time visuals and music create a very interesting roller-coaster type effect.
Once you're up, the views are spectacular. Everything from Central Park to the Statue of Liberty (just) and beyond as visible on a clear day, and a trip to the top provides a great opportunity to sit back and observe this incredible city from above.
One of the highlights of my visit (and being a Londoner I usually sneer at "touristy stuff"). Definitely worth doing!

In my opinion the best view of New York is from here (at night) it's bloody high up!!!! also the customer service in this building is a million miles better than the Empire state and also the queue's were minimal so it was straight up to the top via the little light show in the lift (very nice touch) no problems.
another nice touch was the sales people out front. to quote "dont go in come back tommorow, we dont want to take your money when you wont be able to see anything come back tommorow and heres a discount voucher"
Lots of bad weather that day brought low cloud so it would have been pointless to go in as you wouldnt have been able to see anything but cloud from the top.
It was nice to see them put the customer above profit.

One of the few tourist destinations in New York that's not overrated. You can see New York, New Jersey and Connecticut from here. Stop in Maison du Chocolat (it's in the same building) before you go up, splurge on some fabulous pieces of chocolate, and then go up into the sky. Also, take the time to view the murals in this building. They are fabulous, as is the Art Deco architecture.
By the way, that garden below is known as the Channel Gardens, because it runs between the France and Great Britain buildings. A block away over past the NBC building, is Minamoto Kitchoan, a wonderful Japanese confectionery shop. Unless you're made of money and like to spend it unwisely, avoid the overpriced shops in the area. There's a Pret a Manger nearby that's just fine. Or, have fun and get real New York pizza at John's- you have to by a pie, though. Also, don't bother to go skating here in winter- it's overpriced, crowded, and no fun. Head down to Bryant Park where it's much cheaper, friendlier, and nicer. That's where the urbanites go.

Go here! NOT empire state building. Empre, you have to wait a long line and it takes ages to go up but this one you can actually see empire too!

Best viewing platform in all of New York City. If the weather is somewhat clear, you'll have a breathtaking view of Manhattan, Central Park and the surrounding boroughs.
Best things are the glass walls as opposed to the prisonesque metal bars on other platforms, which just obscure the view. The glass walls here allow you to have a clear view of Manhattan and allow much better photographic memories ;)
I also recommend looking up when you're in the elevator. Whooo!
