The Electric was before its complete makeover a few years ago, my favourite cinema in London. There was something about the place, its location, its history, the films being shown, that made the place special. It is now very different, much more commercial but very cool with huge comfortable leather seats where one can pretty much lay down even more comfortably than in one’s own couch! There is a bar in the cinema serving alcohol and even double leather “beds” at the back for those looking for something really different. The downside is that there are quite fewer seats compared to other cinemas and the shows are invariably booked in advance (very annoying for people like me who don’t tend to plan such things really in advance) and also quite expensive. But The Electric has redefined the cinema experience so it is worth a little premium (and people seem to agree since it’s always full). Note that on certain weekdays they have special shows for young mums with their kids under two.

Whenever i come to london the electric normally gets a visit. If its for food or the cinema it always provides a good serice. Apart form when they ran out of milk during the breakfast serice.

This is cinema in style! Every seat in this kitschy one-screen Notting Hill movie theatre is big, leather and supremely comfortable, and comes with a table for your popcorn and drink. I don’t mean an airline style tray that you pull down from the seat in front of you, I mean an actual coffee table. The star-studded short which plays before the feature film imploring you to turn your mobile phone off and adhere to other similar rules is worth a visit in itself, and while at first glance you may think the prices exhorbitant, even a brief thought about what you normally pay in your local multiplex to be treated like an inconvenience by the school-age staff and to sit in uncomfortable, sticky and cramped seats will convince you that the joy of the Electric is worth a couple of extra pounds. If you really want to splash out, the two sofas at the very back of the cinema cost £30 each and come with enormous poufs which transform these already large seats into something closer in relation to a double bed.

The Electric screens a mixture of Hollywood blockbusters and arthouse and/or foreign films, and also celebrates festivals or seasons during the year when a particular genre of film is given precedence, but owing to the fact that it only has one screen film-choice here is very limited. I would suggest that the higher than average prices and lack of choice rules the Electric out as a regular haunt, but is an ideal place to go for a treat or a special occasion. The multitude of great places to eat and drink just metres from the door is another draw, and yet another factor that makes this such a good place to go when you want to treat yourself!

Great place to catch a movie. Small, intimate cinema that serves wine, tea and food! You can book a sofa to your self at the back or huge seats with foot stools, it really is a special experience and the brasserie next door is worth a reservation.

Whoah! This cinema is one of a kind. Guys, if you want to take a girl to a casual date and still impress her, Electric Cinema is the perfect place. The luxuous, original and spacious interior, the leather seatings, the footstools and the 2-seater sofas at the back of the theatre make this place a very romantic one.
Just one tip: book in advance (you can book online).

The Electric Cinema is something of a hot topic to locals of the Portobello area - on the one hand people were delighted when the Cinema was bought out and saved from the possibility of a life as an office block, but on the other, it now stands as yet another example of the increasingly gentrified persona that Notting Hill now assumes. Consider this: the previous incarnation of the Electric showed pretty much the same movies, the screen was the same as was the decor. Prices were about £6 per adult. The new Electric, however, for a very similar experience will set you back between £9-20. That said, the comfortable seats with foot rests are inspired and you do feel privileged to be there. I'm not entirely convinced and the adjoining bar is ridiculously over-priced but if celeb-spotting is your thing then this is the place for you.

The Electric cinema on Portobello Road is a what I would describe as a great cinematic experience. Combined with a private members club, restaurant and bar, the Electric offers more than just a picture house. Serving champagne and salmon balls as opposed to pop corn and skittels in the screening area, the venue is definately a step above the rest in terms of a quality evening out at the pictures. With a choice of comfortable chairs and sofas to choose from, kick back and take in a film of your choice!

This is one of the best cinemas in London. They have couches at the back so you can lounge and watch a film. The tickets can be pretty hard to get sometimes depending on what movie is showing. There is a bar there where you can get drinks before you lounge on your big comfy couch to watch your film. While the movie is on there are people serving tubs of food like sausages and mash and other stuff. This is a briliant night out for anyone. I think they have events for kids as well.

This place is awesome. Try booking one of the couches at the back. A bit more expensive, but well worth it. Perfect for date night ;)

Tickets can be hard to get, particularly for new releases. I had to book 2 weeks in advance for Bond!

This is so much more than your average trip to the flicks. You can snuggle back in the huge leather chairs and instead of the usual popcorn, pig out on a tub of more substantial delights, like bangers and mash or spring rolls. They do alcohol too so you can make a night of it.

The private member's club next door is well worth a look if you ever get the chance. It's usually heaving with Notting Hill media types but the food is sublime. Highly recommended.

Yep, love this place. Padded leather armchairs, food & alcohol to hand. what's not to like? Book early though and its sometimes difficult to get tickets as the private members club above gets priority booking. They also do kids films on weekdays/saturday mornings.

What a lovely eveing! This is a wonderful place for a date, but you do need to book in advance. You know its a wonderful theater when you could see Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix or Buggsey Malone, they show a very interesting blend of old and new movies. The chairs are leather lounge chairs with automans or two seater sofas wich provided you with the most amazing thing of all... space. It was more comfortable then watching a movie in my own home. And the attached resterant was excelent, with wonderful food for moderate prices. On the whole a great night out in London.
