This museum was controversial when opened, which may not interest many people, but does tell something about the Basque Country (Euskadi). Importantly, the museum is excellent, with some standing exhibits and others that change. After 3 visits to the museum, I still find myself wanting to return to the Guggenheim when I go to Bilbao. There are excellent, perhaps less known (but not always) artists in the changing exhibits. Often the works are challenging, controversial, and large. The museum space is perfect for this type of art, which needs to be contemplated from a distance, or walked around, at leisure.
On the ground floor, wander through the immense labyrinth “La materia del tiempo”, by Richard Serra, but do not overlook permanent pieces such as those by Tapiès and Txillida, to mention just two.
Do not plan to spend less than 2 hours, and be prepared for some potential disconnect between the permanent collection and the temporary exhibits. There may be a few other items tucked away which will also lead you to question the collection criteria, but overall, there is nothing to criticize. See for yourself.
Oh, and be prepared for a possible line - it does happen at times. And don’t forget to note the skillful planting of the huge flower puppy outside the entrance. As silly as it seems, it is well done and I always wish my garden would thrive as much as this dog’s petalled fur!
