great place to fish, when you go go for a walk over to the far side to a place called duffy bay. you cant miss lol. i was there at the weekend and struggled in the bit outside the hut, so i spoke to the guy behind the counter and he sent me over to duffy bay. i got my limit of 5 in about an hour, the 5 fish weighed in at 14 lb which i thought was a great average. the guy let me use a boat to get to the far side and he couldnt have been nicer. the price for my ticket was 22 pounds for 5 fish and 10 hours. only thing i didnt like was the rain :(. so to sum up good cafe, good access, good staff and exellant fishing.

GREAT PLACE TO FISH BUT FAR TO EXPENSIVE COMPARED TO OTHERS AROUND AND DO NOT DARE SUGGEST ANYTHING TO robert EVEN THO HE ASKS FOR SUGGESTIONS IN his FORUM
I am sorry but even tho this is a good fishery , contrary to what ROBERT says it is not the cheapest about and very far from it.

We had simply explained to ROBERT wehad taken a day out in Hamilton  to be very surprised by there tickets there   £12 for 2    £14 for 3  £16 for 4  and £19 for 6   compared to £26 in his.   If you catch inyour limit i explained they allow a £5 upgrade which again is not allowed at Ardgowan, considering most travel a fair bit to it this is surely very poor.  We did not slag HIM or ARDGOWAN off but instead made a suggestion and opinion  in the forum which he asks for.  I did that with no abuse what so ever but in return have been barred from not only the forum but the fishery.   This is a very strange reaction and has obviously touched a nerve with ROBERT!  but hey ho plenty of good fisheries about at trust me   --a lot cheaper and far better value for ur day and travel guys so fish about

ROBERT you enjoy ur endeavours!

Been Fishing Ardgowan for sometime now and would say its my favourite loch. I feel the fishing is great with the fish in the loch being so healthy and put up a great fight. I feel its great for the money you pay and thats what everybody wants. The cafe is a very welcoming atmoshpere and you also have a variety of foods and drinks for great prices too. WELL DONE ROBERT , Keep the good work up

i was at ardgowan fishery today, i had a great morning turning 20 + fish, lost one of 9 lbs after a 5 minute fight and ended up with my 3 fish weighing 13 lbs. i was fly fishing from a boat, the boats are in fine working order and its great to get to those hard to reach spots, i was at first using a horned sedge on the surface which turned about 8 fish before i realised the hook was broke :(. after that i gave a mudler a try with great success, around the fishery i seen no or very little rubbish and as mentioned there are plenty of bins around. the cafe was very clean and tidy with good food available at very good prices. the owner told me about these reviews so i thought i would give my 2 cents, sounds like the guy who wrote the review before me had a bad day and decided to make a big deal of it, he also pointed out he has unquestionable local knowledge, i would like to point out that never in the 17 years the fishery has been open has an eel been caught. sound like the guy has no idea what hes on about and is trying to put this really good place down for no reason other than he had a bad day. maybe your client should choose better guides next time.

thats very interesting that there has been no reports of eels ever being caught in ardgowan but the many sightings of them by the previous owner brian would suggest they are very much present in the loch. not so much in the main body of the loch but at the small pool at the base of the loch thom damb wall. i myself have caught one around 3 ft long from the outward damb from the deep hole in front of the bay with a small waterfall.
the system of lochs that include the thom, upper gryffe and lower gryffe are connected by a series of rivers and streams. the main one being the gryffe/black and white cart system that leads to the clyde. all of which are very well populated by eels and there are many reports of this to back this up.
so it is by no stretch of the imagination to think that they could reach lochs like ardgowan with little effort.

Review of Ardgowan Fishery from 17 December 2008

I’m not the best person to review this as a place to fish (so hopefully someone else will) but I have visited the cafe there and found it to be a very pleasant and nice place to have a lovely cup of tea and hot snack! It’s also friendlier than the nearby Cornalees cafe (at least, it was on the one occasion I was there). Fishing apart, this is a great place to start a walk around one of the reservoirs in the area or along the Greenock Cut.
