1 review of St Peter's Church, Preston Park in English
Situated in the heart of modern suburban Brighton, next to Preston Park and Preston Manor, St Peter’s is an odd survivor. Featured in the Domesday Book in 1086, the present building dates from the 13th century. It has an almost rural appearance, with a small square tower, and flint walls. I suspect most of its neighbours are unaware of it.
Unfortunately, the Victorians rather spoiled the interior, and a major fire in 1906 didn’t help. It no longer feels very mediaeval. But the reason for a detour is the surviving wall paintings, dating from the late 13th century. They feature a very-well preserved martyrdom of St Thomas a Becket and a slightly less distinct one of St Michael, weighing souls. The guide shows the wonderfully vivid Nativity fresco that existed before the fire, now rather faded. The chancel has an incredibly elaborate Victorian decorative scheme of geometric painted walls, which are badly in need of restoration.
The church is now in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust. Preston Manor next door is also well worth a visit.
