Niederegger Einkaufserlebnis, Café und Marzipan-Salon.

BEWARE: RACIST CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!!

After I complained about a racist incident I witnessed at their cafe and didn’t even get a response or acknowledgment from Niederegger, I hope that this review will change your decision about going to this cafe.

I’m a Canadian expat who had been going to Niederegger since 2003. The service was never great (unless you look monied, they don’t serve you with respect) and even though they get a lot of international customers, the servers nor salespeople in the store don’t speak ANY English.

Sometime last year while I was waiting in line, there was a spanish customer who could not speak German who was making an extensive order. Since the Niederegger lady behind the counter couldn’t understand her well, she and a fellow German customer started making fun of her. They made fun of her in German in front of the entire store, thinking it was okay since the customer couldn’t understand a word they were saying. I DID, however and complained immediately. Instead of an apology, the Niederegger salesperson said I was a spoil sport.

If you think it’s NOT okay to make fun of non-German speaking customers in public (especially when they have no idea that they are being made fun of), then don’t go to this cafe. They are “legendary” because they are the oldest, but nowadays, there are better cafes in Lübeck where you can spend your money.

In fact, we annoy the tourists so constantly with her questioning for 'marzipan "and that famous" Buddenbrooks-Cafe ". The Cafe Niederegger has nothing, but also absolutely nothing to do with the Buddenbrooks and the famous writer Thomas Mann. Absolutely nothing! However, located on the Dining-room on the second floor a marzipan museum. There (copied from the noble gross mass), there are several depictions of famous people - including Thomas Mann
Otherwise, it's true: as Lübeck, the enthusiasm for this sweetness keeps within limits, are just enough options to attaching to overeat.
Otherwise, the Lübeck-visitor can find in the "Breite Strasse" all that marzipan heart desires and more. In the top and rear rooms can drink coffee and eat cake, but rather a location of the famous Lübeck widows with all the answers, or - at most - for visitors and Lübeck marzipan fans who want to know ...

This is another world institution. If you come to Luebeck, it would be churlish not to come here.
Niederegger makes the world's finest marzipan and inside you can have it in any shape your heart desires...old fashioned fruit and veg, a German good-luck pig, animals...you name it, at some stage they've made it. If your tastes are still more sophisticated, please treat yourself to one of the (expensive) boxes of marzipan chocolates. They are exquisite.
The tiles on the wall are worth looking at...they are very old and very fine.
It's a memory I've kept since childhood, so it must be special :)

Touristy yes, but not a trap. Delicious tapas style tasting dishes, circa 10€ for 6 to share, stylish décor and decent coffee.

Coffee, cappucino, cakes, everyhting here is Marzipan-based so in a nutshell you have to like it and it can get a bit too sweet … but it is the speciality and you should try ! Especially the Marzipan Baumkuchen, delicious ! You also have a shop where you can buy anything and everything marzipan-based !!!
