only been here twice, but had a real good time each time i have been here,
I came here to see Florence and the Machine and was one of the best gigs I have been too.
The sound, the venue was quality.
Got very hot and sweaty in the standing area.
GREAT NIGHT
This is my favourite venue in London – and I’ve been to pretty much all of them at one point or another. The sound is amazing. The bar staff are fast. Everybody has a good view no matter where they stand. Great place.
Looking at pics on the hard-drive as you do and I am reminded that a particular evening last September was spent at this delightful venue in the heart of cosmopolitan Brixton catching Fever Ray live. She was supported by a nutty act whose name escapes me but left me going ‘WTF’ over and over and over again.
The venue is pretty cool – I used to rave in there back in the days when drum and bass was all I lived for. It was nice to see it sober. Brixton has changed in lots of ways but the chicken shops remain and who doesn’t like white meat?!
Definitely a place to go to. It is usually very busy so you need to get there quite early to avoid any disappointments.
Have really enjoyed going here over the years. Agree about the sloping floor, it is very helpful for those of us who aren’t particularly tall! The bars can get a bit rammed so is best to have a few before you go in….
Good set from Toots and the Maytals last week, the beginning and the end were the highlights, good atmosphere and packed full of fans.
Probably one of the best music venues in the UK. Went to see The Courteeners here Oneof the best gigs ever not just coz of the great music – great atmosphere, great location to the tube, great acoustics, big enough to get lost and meet random people and good bar area. Only downside is the queueing and the fact the bar doesnt take card, which is tragic when you are semi-sober after waiting 20mins for a whiskey.
This is probably my absolute favourite gig venue - and has been for many years.
The sloping floor makes it easier to see (as I'm very short!) and the black ceiling and fortress-like stage surround makes it actually feel like you're outside when you look above the stage.
The acoustics are brilliant and I have seen some fantastic bands here.
In fact I went to see Leftfield here last November and it was THE loudest gig I have EVER been to (and I've seen the Jim Jones Revue live!). My hair literally bounced back in time with the bass and my jeans were vibrating.
It's just a complete bugger for me to get home from if the gig goes on past the last train!
This is one of the top live venues in London and some now legendary performers have been let loose here. The vibe is amazing, the acoustics are brilliant.
As others have mentioned there are other drinks available and the bars are within the performance area meaning you can see the stage still while getting your drink.
A stones throw from the Brixton tube (the end of the Victoria line), the location is easy to get to and home from and Brixton offers great pre gig eating and drinking.
We saw the Primal Scream show last week at the Brixton Academy and as far as the sound goes it was impeccable. Each part could be heard. The snare on the kit was sharp and punchy, unlike so many 'rock sound engineers' who seem to think that it should like a pong. SO annoying. Anyway, WHY HAS HE LEFT JUST 1 STAR for the review? Well its because the sound and venue score 5 stars and the price of the drinks knock it down to a 1.
WHAT AN ABSOLUTE DISGRACE. 1/2 PINT AND VODKA = £8.50. O2 GROUP YOU NEED TO HOLD YOUR HEAD IN SHAME, I'M SURE THIS IS NOT JUST THE CASE IN THESE VENUES BUT I WONT BE GOING TO ANYMORE SHOWS. YOU HAVE KILLED LIVE MUSIC FOR MANY OF US AND I HOPE YOU'RE HAPPY WITH YOUR MARGINS...
F#'8K OFF
David watkins i have to say that it is not just )O2 charging these prices. £8.50 is the cheaper end of the scale. i would suggest you order pints in future, or do what i do and have a few in the pub lol. you should try going to a few more clubs before slagging off O2 to such an extent! i am a regular clubber and don’t even blink at paying £2.50 for a can of red bull, or even £4.50 a pint. it’s the norm!

Maybe it's my impeccable taste in music (no heckling from the cheap seats, thanks), but I've never been to a bad gig at Brixton Academy, from the Prodigy to the Manic Street Preachers.
The rococo décor and intimate atmosphere makes any show more exciting, and that sloped floor is the saviour of short so-and-sos like me - at least until music venues cave in and organise their audiences by height, school photo style.
The toilets are revolting (once you've braved the epic queues), the bar will be mobbed and cost you an arm or a leg, and the staff will be surly. But once you're favourite band are on stage, you won't care one bit.
JaneB Well, me too! But I'd probably mind more if it was a cheap bar and terrible sound. Then again, maybe not... ;)

Had a good night here when PVD played, a good size venue to. The drinks are abit expensive thou... Nearly a fiver for a pint of cider.
There is nothing really bad you can say about this place. Had a great time last time we went. Definately recommend it as a venue, top gigs, top organisation.
Cool place. I like it. Went to see Mariliyn Manson's performance and it was cool, specially because the area is not so big so when they threw smoke and fog couldn't see anything until he appeared. Very intimate and good atmosphere.
But because it's a small place , they have to know which kind of concerts are ideal for that space.
I went to Tiesto's concert and it was terrible. The lights and everything was great but the place is not ideal for electronic concerts.
Everybody wanted to dance and they just couldn't because the seats were too close. The floor was quite dirty as well so they have to take care of the cleanliness of the place.
Other than that, is fine. Just next time please choose carefully which artists shows are perfect to perform there.
Brixton academy is my favourite live music venue. The slanted floor means that even if your at the back you can generally still get a good view of the stage and its got that brilliant intimate venue feel. Things first timers should look out for. Expect to que to get in, this is just as they filter you through the bag searches and generally moves fairly quickly but often look s horrendous. Secondly there is a cloak room which costs £2 an item which i thought was reasonable but i heard some guys from the north in the queue behind me saying they thought was expesive. At the end of the gig expect to queue for your coat.
Other than that enjoy!
in the words of my daughter 'bloody amazing!' she thoroughly enjoyed herself and i became the best mum in the world for buying the tickets! very pleased!
I was nervous about visiting the Academy a) because my companion had let me down last minute and I was seeing the Scissor Sisters on my own and b) well, it's in Brixton....
I needn't have worried. A short stroll from Brixton Tube and there it was. Round and welcoming and somewhat majestic. Charming door staff smiled you into an auditorium with baroque decoration that suggested Romeo and Juliet in full period rig. The audience floor is raised so everyone gets a good view of the stage (as long as you're not standing behind a giant that is). And somehow in true Tardis fashion, despite this gig being a sell-out there was still room to maintain one's personal space and have a jig about to 'I don't feel like dancin'.
I didn't try out the bar, food or merchandise store but in terms of liking this place as a friendly, intimate and safe venue then yes, a thumbs up from me.
Still my number one London gig venue. The famous sloping floor is, ironically, a great leveller as everyone can see the band! Not asking much now is it? I rather like leaning on the bar at the back whenever possible. Remember a great Hugh Cornwell Stranglers gig here and a rather tasty Bowie, er, Tin Machine one too! Truth to be told, it can be a bit lively outside after hours so pinch a copper's helmet and enjoy a police escort to safer shores. Job done.
I have seen so many big acts here that Ive lost count now
The acoustics are awful unless you are down in the front BUT the atmosphere is without equal...but then I guess when there are so many like minded people in such a large space thats understandable
The queue for the bar is horrendous though....buy three just to be on the safe side!!!
Brilliant gig venue.
The interior is really attractive and the size is perfect for medium sized gigs, really intimate. The floor slopes to help people standing further back to see more. There is also a balcony level.
One of the last few good mid-size gig venues in London - comparable to the no-gone Astoria!
