An excellent place to watch a gig. A lot has already been mentioned, but the slanted floor is helpful for providing everyone with the chance of a half decent view, the range of seating from up in the gods to down in the main floor works well depending on what you’re after from a gig, it’s got very good sound, and most importantly the venue generates a fantastic atmosphere.

For such a big place with thousands of people wandering about - its actually relatively easy to get about in, and they have done the facilities pretty well with lots of bars dotted around the place which all work reasonably quickly, a decent cloakroom system and a fair amount of toilets dotted around. And it offers food unlike a lot of other venues - which I’ve always found a bit odd.

It’s never going to be quite as good as seeing a band in a really small intimate venue - but then again the bands that play here would rarely (if ever) play any of those places. With so many of London’s traditional music venues gone or in danger of being closed for one reason or other - it’s reassuring to see the thriving trade here, and you can’t imagine it ever closing with the amount of people coming through the door.

Great venue, such a great feel when everyone is dancing and singing the night away. Another guy said in this review that it was hot, he must of been there the same time i did because i was cooked. But it was good.

I’ve seen hundreds of gigs in London in the years I’ve been here, and the Academy is probably my favourite place to see bands. Well, okay, smaller venues like the Astoria are cool because you’re never far away from the band, but if you accept that certain bands have to play in places of a certain size, then this is about as good as it gets. It’s kind of a cool old building.

The Brixton Academy has won NME’s “UK best gig venue” for something like 10 of the last 11 years.

They have stalls/standing downstairs and seats upstairs (separate ticket types). Sound is good. It’s easy to get close to the soundboard area, which is in the middle of the floor near the back.

It’s wide, so you can pack a lot of people in relatively closely. The floor slopes downwards to the stage, making it easier to see (not so much that someone really tall right in front won’t block you, though). There’s a railing in the middle of the floor about a third of the way back from the stage. This means that surging mosh crowds up front are kept separate from the majority of people who want to just stand or jump or dance.

They serve food in the lobby.
They have a big cloakroom upstairs.
They have toilets upstairs, downstairs off the lobby, and at the front sides of the hall.
I’ve never had any problem with security there.
There are at least 6 bars - maybe more I’m missing. Not cheap, though, of course.

Capacity is around 4000, so I’ve seen bands like Nine Inch Nails (5 times), No Doubt, Queens of the Stone Age, Spiritualized, Bob Dylan, Mogwai, Maxïmo Park, Beastie Boys, Iron Maiden, Massive Attack, the Chemical Brothers, etc.

Awesome venue, the floor is slanted since it’s an old theater which gives everyone a much better view of the stage. Amazing sound as well, really good place to see a concert.

My only complaint was that it was SO BLOODY HOT!! People were fainting and walking out towards the end of the set.

At this venue I have spent quite a few memorable nights.
The atmosphere at this venue is unique in its own right and gets completely electric during gigs, which is why I like it so much. The size of the place is just perfect - large enough to hold a rather big crowd, but still small enough for the gig not to become impersonal, for the gig to be intimate in a way that it could never be, had the size of the place been larger. Also, I must mention that light and sound always seem to function perfectly at gigs at this venue, whichm at most other establishments is not always the case.
I warmly recommend this place to anyone interested in going out and listening to music. This venue creates the perfect framing for a perfect night out.

This is one of the top live venues in London and some now legendary performers have been let loose here. The vibe is amazing, the acoustics brilliant and there is an intimacy you get with the band that other venues just can’t deliver

Assuming you have good taste in music, Brixton academy is a guaranteed good night out. It’s barely two minutes away from the tube off the main high street with two cheap as chips warm up pubs on route. It’s worth fueling up at these spots as a pint inside is usually about £3.50.

Ignore the touts “buying or selling” and get in early to get a good spot (obvious really). Inside, the venue’s auditorium is pretty vast and the queues for the bars are gonna get big because people wanna have fun. The sloping floor has acquired a patentable stickiness of a thousand dropped pints from a thousand gigs. I made a contribution to this ongoing experiment last night at Beautiful nights (Levellers 20th anniversary with Dreadzone - oh yes).

Awesome venue just down the road from me. All the big guns play here and rightly so. This is definitely one of the best venues in London. Words don't do this place justice. Check out the vid!

My favourite venue of all time! Not only does the academy play host to huge acts, it also has a unique layout. The sloping standing area enables the crowd to have an excellent view of bands such as Greenday, Queens of the Stone Age and Snow Patrol, regardless of where they choose to stand, be it right at the front, or at the back nearer one of the many bars. Seating is also available, with a similar sloped design for optimum viewing. Due to the popularity of the venue and the calibre of performing acts, tickets for shows tend to sell out quickly, and reappear on ebay at an inflated price. Be sure to be on the ticket sites as and when the tickets come out to avoid dissapointment!

This venue is where I first saw Nine Inch Nails play a sell out gig. Is this the only reason I'm giving five stars? I very much doubt it! the floor slopes down towards the stage. This is perfect and maximises your view of the performance, especially if like me, you're the size of Thumbelina. The overall size of the venue is suitable for accomodating international super-stars or your regular 'famous for a day then buy me a pint' type of bands. Splendid decor resonates from those coloumns keeping the place afloat, riding the waves of an adrenaline fuelled atmosphere. Is this what heaven is like? is that a cloud over there? it sure sounds like it. Simply stunning.

A popular venue for any band touring the U.K. Acts have included The Prodigy, The Clash and The Beastie Boys. The floor slopes gradually down towards the stage, giving even the shortest a sporting chance at seeing one of the many bands that visit this venue.

Brixton Academy has to be home to some of the coolest bands and rapper's ever to have played as well as all the up and coming bands waiting to be discovered.

There is a constant flow of great nights here, and i have never been let down by the venue.

The academy itself seems a lot bigger than it is but there is more than enough space to dance, jump and jam, split over 2 floors gives the venue a nice spacious feeling which draws together with the performance stage.

A wicked place for seeing your favorite acts and always a fab atmosphere!

All the big names play here before they get to the Arena size shows and with its unique South London location and a huge capacity, it si surprising that it is the winner of the NME's best venue most years for the past 10.

I am not surprised. It has an intmacy that belies its size and the vine round the stage is as cool as Rock and Roll itself. It is big enough to move about without being too crushed, it has loads of bars, they book amazing bands, toilets aren't great, but useable and not always too shabby at the end. Besides you can meet your friends in their overflow pub next door before the gig. The personal highlight of over 40 nights out there is not the guest area, which is a huge disspointment with very poor sound. It is the slopped floor which can make your heels rise during a show or maybe make you fall flat on your nose if you have drunk too much!

As an extensive gigger, i feel i know what makes for a good venue for live music. good acoutisc, fantastic atmosphere and large enough to be able to utilise a decent light show. the Brixton academy has all of this. with a capacity of 3,000, split between the main floor and the upper balcony, the academy is a modern music venue, with an old world theatre feel.
the world's biggest bands always make a stop here while in london, but it still small enough, unlike massive venues such as wembley or the NEC in birmingham, to have an intimacy with the performer...which i feel personally, has been lost in recent years.

i personally have seen Silverchair, Incubus and Audioslave here...all of which have been some of my favourtie concert experiences
