Review of My Old Dutch from 1 February 2012

Used to go here regularly as a student, when they were still a relatively new venture – however, went there yesterday and the service was terrible. Pancakes took ages to arrive and was stone cold and not at all fresh, when we asked for a replacement the chef came up with a new one, but told us that the pancake was cold because of the weather outside and we should eat quicker.

We had also had nachos to start, the toppings were squeezed out of a tube and they were not at all generous with the cheese.
Won’t be going back, especially as there is now alot more competition in the pancake market!!!

Review of My Old Dutch from 21 December 2011

A great place to eat. The pancakes are enormous, and I definitely could only manage one course. One day I will go just for the sweet pancakes. I’ve not got past the main course yet!
Mondays is a good day to go because all pancakes are just £5. On other days they are quite a bit more expensive. But Mondays is always very busy. Be prepared to wait at least 10 minutes before being served

Review of My Old Dutch from 15 June 2011

This pancake house has been around for years. Many a lunch time and evening meals were had at this wonderful place. Tasty pancakes of the most huge types delivered to you at the table in the largest plates ever. Always service with a smile when I used to go there in the 80's and 90's and I would want to eat there again, this millennium. Central to Holborn, Tottenham Court Road Stations, a stones throw from The Gt. British Museum and many office and shops, this place is going to be here for a long time. Parking is not available as is the case in most locations in central London but the public service route and journey on foot is very easy to do. There's loads to see along the way.

Review of My Old Dutch from 28 May 2011

Reviewed using Android. Get the app

Had the avocado salad (after seeing the massive size of the pancakes, didn't feel capable of having one for lunch without a 2h digestive nap), which was good, but slightly pricey for the amount. The Kaasballen I ordered as a side were delish, perfect for sharing. Followed up with a massive plate of Poffertjes and ice cream, I felt super satiated and happy.

Nevertheless, probably wouldn't pay the £18 for the experience again. Next time, going on Monday, when it's £5 per pancake!

All that needs to be said is that the pancakes were enormous, so understandably my friend Angharad struggled to get through her chilli con carne-filled pancake. I thoroughly enjoyed (and completely polished off) my “Amsterdammer” – a pancake with apple slices, bacon and maple syrup. There are rumours circulating that I also finished Angharad’s pancake for her, but I will neither confirm nor deny this.

maggiebob The Amsterdammer is my favourite too! I only wish I'd had room for a pudding ;)

Review of My Old Dutch from 18 April 2011

This pancake place is great! It has a really lovely friendly atmosphere; perfect for a date and a fun dinner option with friends and family. Be warned, the pancakes are huge! I had the artichoke pancake and a tasty fruit beer. The service wasn't amazing as they forgot we had ordered a sweet pancake and then took forever to bring us the bill, but we were sooo stuffed we didn't really mind.

Best pancakes ever!!!!! Its all about the banana and chocolate. The pancakes are huge, and the banana is cooked inside the pancake and then you get a lovely little pot of chocolate sauce in the middle. Oooohhh, just love this place!

I am not a big pancake fan. Anyway today we decided to go the "My Old Dutch". The food was fine and I liked it more than I thought before. I had pancakes with Chilli con Carne and one with nutella later.
The service has room for improvement to say it politely. The waiter didn't even know the menu which made it hard to order. He spilled the drinks etc.
It's a little bit pricey so. 12.5% Service charge is included which explains the poor service.
The restaurant has step-free access.

Review of My Old Dutch from 17 February 2010

We visited My Old Dutch on Pancake Day - along with seemingly everyone else in London...

We were prepared for the wait in the rain, with our umbrellas at the ready. But the seemingly huge queue went down very quickly (much to my partner's dismay as he wanted to watch the match in the pub across the road...!)

The maitre d' was very helpful and quick to seat us downstairs. Our friendly waitress was at the table with our menus as soon as we were seated. We decided to go for a starter of fried cheese balls and a duck and greek pancake to share between three of us as a main course.

The cheese balls came speedily to the table and were absolutely delicious! I can't fault them one bit.

The main course of pancakes (of course) was beautiful too, especially the Greek. The halloumi cheese was delicious, and I when I asked for no olives, I got no olives.. fantastic!

The only strange moment was with dessert. We had the Nutella pancake, which again was beautifully made. We asked for a scoop of ice cream with the pancake, and rather than a generic Vanilla ice-cream scoop, for some reason we had strawberry.. which was lovely for my partner and mother, but I myself am not a fan of strawberry ice cream. Apart from that, absolutely DELICIOUS!

I'm looking forward to going back on a Monday to indulge in the £5 Monday deal.

Review of My Old Dutch from 16 February 2010

Must say I hopped between 2 and 3 stars in my mind for some time but settled on 3 considering it was Pancake day, thus possibly their busiest ever and may have contributed to the mishaps. Mishaps being; pancake a little undercooked so quite stodgy, toppings being sparse, waitress bordering a little on the rude side. The place is big and has some interesting pieces on the menu but many of the ones our group sampled where a touch on the bland side - either go traditional or go saucy but straddling the two didn't seem to yield the most favourable result.

I think they pancakes are quite pricey for what they are, and while the pates are big and exciting as they arrive, I just don't think they deliver on taste.

I think perhaps the sweet options might be better here - the poffertjes are a must if you do pay this spot a visit. Might be worth returning on anything-other-than-pancake-day, but sadly didn't quite live up to my expectations.

Review of My Old Dutch from 16 February 2010

Dear me. My Old Dutch, I really wanted to love you. My eyes lit up with glee as I waited outside in the drizzle, nosed pressed against the glass like a child gawping at the Christmas windows at Hamley's.

And although I freakin' love pancakes, I'm far from a connoisseur - I knock 'em up at home with the amateurish enthusiasm of a kid 'helping' in the kitchen, and no matter burnt or covered in batter I am at the end of it, I'll still be ridiculously pleased with myself as I chomp through the results. When it comes to pancakes, I'm easily pleased, so I thought me and My Old Dutch would be a match made in heaven.

Alas, sadly not. Visiting on the busiest day of the year, we expected the queues and the wait in the rain. We expected the staff to stressed and rushed off their feet. But I also expected the quality of the food to be better. My pancake was rubbery, undercooked and bland, and there wasn't much in the way of toppings. And the staff weren't anywhere near as attentive as they could have been; even with the hordes, a complete lack of chit-chat and smiles is pretty lame in my book, and they didn't seem to be communicating with each other well.

The poffertjes (teensy weensy pancakes with maple syrup) we took away with us were the best part of the meal. And they did give me a balloon when I left, despite my being a grown adult on the brink of lapsing into a carb-induced coma. So it ain't all bad.

maggiebob Do give them another shot when they are not quite so busy. I know it's no excuse, but I've always enjoyed the pancakes in there, so I'm guessing the volume of custom brought the quality down. Mind you, you'd think they would up their game for what must be effectivly their national holiday...

JaneB Thanks - I definitely want to try the sweet ones so I'm sure I will be back when it's not so hectic! But you're right, it's not like they didn't know it would be busy on Pancake Day so they should have been prepped to the max to cope with it...

Review of My Old Dutch from 16 February 2010

After reading the excellent Miss Rachelle's guide I too was disappointed. This comes after enjoying previous pancakes from the now defunct Ealing branch of My Old Dutch.

I sent this emall below 3 times over a week to
info@myolddutch.com to get a 'we have received your email' acknowledgement.

I still have not had a proper response as of today. Yes today is pancake day and am off to buy a pan now to make my own.

Here's my email:

I had a meal for two, dining in at your holborn branch.

i ordered the seafood pancake, citing 'king prawns' as an ingredient when the disappointingly sparse topping of the pancake arrived it was
indeed tiny frozen prawns, these were not even small prawns, never mind being king prawns.
a couple of prawns (upon near completing the pancake- as i was hungry)
were actually still frozen in the middle!
i was most disappointed with this breach of advertising descriptions of sales of goods act 1979 failure and the fact i had 'optional
service' added.

i could not complain as the service was fine, it was the ingredients, lack of topping (on the MOD savoury) and the cooking that was the
problem.
i have a photo/scan of the receipt if needed
the meal was on 9th jan 2010 at 2.21pm. Sahira was our server
The bill was £24.92

---

I'm off to Argos to go pancake pan shopping.

Urbanite I agree, we should set up a pancake van next year outside and see how it compares - generous toppings for everyone! :)

DJStoney If we had a rival Dutch pancake van outside would that be Double Dutch?

I'm the bounce off the wall pancake type of girl, mention those bad boys and I spring on them. I wake up on Pancake Day like a child at Christmas and tummy rumble my way to lunch. Easily pleased me...
Shame about my old Dutch though. Now I got the pic of the pack to be fair, a great salmon crepe, huge and covered in a creamy dill sauce (bit too much, but better than not enough). The thing is, I was at a table of 8, and no one else was impressed.
Staff seemed quite flip and not bothered, I know it's their busiest day of the year- but you know it's coming, you suck it up and get on with it (spoken like a former waitress).
Should have tried the sweet version... ah the curse of hunger combined with the fear of the dentist!

crazyfrog360 Good Review - I always wanted to try it out... however, I think its perhaps best to give it a miss... Thanks for a frank & straight to the point review.... David

What could be more annoying than feeling full but unhappy?
Feeling full and unhappy on Pancake Day.
I ordered my MyOldDutch pancake without the chicken, because I'm a fussy Italian and I don't like too many ingredients on my plate, but I might as well have got it with everything on. I couldn't tell the difference between my pancake - without the chicken - and my collegue's, which was supposed to be without the corn.

It didn't taste of much anyway, it was just calories and no pleasure. I need a shot of Nutella now.

Maybe they'd do better on a regular day.

I went here to celebrate my first Pancake Day.
I was impatient to see how they can eat crepes and Pancake in England.
I have to say I was disappointing. I ordered an Old dutch without corn but I don't see the difference with or without. Besides, the crepe isn't very good. It was only to fill the belly but without pleasure.
To finish by the good points, my collegue asked to take away the rest of her crepe and the waiter put it in a box quickly.

Maybe I will be back to try the dessert. The crepe with nutella and banana seem so good.

yotuel nice!

Review of My Old Dutch from 16 February 2010

Maybe visiting My Old Dutch on Pancake Day was a bad idea. I didn't mind the queue for a table (it actually moved pretty quickly) but I get the idea that our food and our waitress would have been a little bit better if they hadn't been so rushed off their feet.

I am always suspect of any restaurant menu which has that '80 dishes around the world' feel to it; and My Old Dutch is like the Michael Palin of pancake houses.

Want a curry pancake? No worries. Moroccan crepe? Sure! Italian? Mexican? Hawaiian? Step right this way.

Well, in for a penny, in for a pound - I'll have the Hawaiian pancake please (ham and pineapple pizzas are my guilty pleasure, so I thought what 'what the hell').

Unfortunately the pancake (massive though it was) was undercooked, leaving it stodgy with a rubbery texture, and about two-thirds of the way through eating it, this felt more like a job than a meal.

The toppings were nothing to write home about either, and in the end it just left me craving a really good pizza.

On the way out we spied quite a few sweet pancakes being served to people which looked pretty good, so maybe the key here is to stick to the desserts.... or make your own at home. Oh, and don't visit on Shrove Tuesday.

Celebrated my first Pancake Day here! It was very crowded but we were seated quickly. I had the Mediterrean pancake. It was yummy. I was expecting a pancake but it essentially was a crepe with sundried tomatoes, cheese and olives-all yummy just the same. Next time I plan to eat sweet.

Review of My Old Dutch from 11 February 2010

A fondly remembered holiday in Amsterdam left me with a craving for properly done Dutch pancakes, so I eagerly sought My Old Dutch out on my return to London.

The pancakes certainly don't disappoint. They are huge (you can barely fit 2 of them on a table, so you may have to be selfish and dine alone!), and the choice is toppings is vast – not good for someone as indecisive as me! If you’re visiting for the first time, try the Amsterdammer (bacon, apple and maple syrup), or My Old Dutch (pretty much a bit of everything). I’ve not (as yet) had the appetite to follow my meal with a sweet pancake.

My only gripe with My Old Dutch would be that the service is sometimes less than courteous. For example we were told quite sharply – in a nearly empty restaurant – that we couldn’t move from our wobbly table to another.

A lovely informal restaurant: I must have spent about 3 hours there in total: coffee with a friend then lunch with some more friends, and the staff didn’t try to hurry us up at all.

The pancake was (predictably) too big, and I couldn’t finish it. But it was delicious; and so was the chocolate milkshake.

I love pancakes and this is the place where you can get a huge varieties. Both savory and sweet. It is a good place to take gals for dates as most gals like pancakes. It is also inexpensive and casual. The casual atmosphere provide a better setting for having a night out which gals that you are trying to get to know more. The milkshakes is not that good though, I have tried once and it was pretty horrible. I didn’t know about the £5 deals on Monday, maybe I should try next Monday is it is still available!
