Al Castello, Earls Court

Al Castello was opened about 2 years ago by my husband, Giovanni (25 years experienced in the catering business) His aim was to serve authentic Italian food cook by Italian chefs and served by Italian waitresses.
Recently, I took over in running the business as he moves on to open another restaurant in the west end. We serve traditional & modern Italian food. Our set menu (aims for anyone on a budget eating out at £7.65 for 2 courses) and chef menu changes every week. We used fresh ingredients everyday. We are well known for our special chocolate cake (made without flour) and creamy succulent cheese cake. All day Breakfast 10a.m.-5pm. from £3.95 ; Castello breakfast is a must have to anyone who loves Italian sausages. contact Susan for more info.

We visited this restaurant as part of a works night out and had the set menu.Things started off well with the staff seating us and welcoming us but oh dear oh dear did it go down hill from there. The food was all cold and most people in my group had to send their food back several times. The lasagne had obviously been cold and had been microwaved and 1 and a half hours later some people still hadnt got a satisfactory main course and we had to leave without them actually eating!!!This was a real shame as this was a prebooked meal and so they had ample warning for a group of 20ish however it seemed like the could not cope at all.
Nevermind - there was a Kebab shop round ther corner.

An authentic Italian restaurant at the Brompton Road end of Earl’s Court Road, frequented by Italians – which is as good a recommendation as any. The décor is fairly plain, with black and white photographs from classic Italian films, showing the stars eating Italian food.

The food is classic Italian fare, although can occasionally be over-salted for me, but portions of pasta and pizzas are very generous. The wine list is OK and good value but not especially varied. Expect a two course meal for two with wine to cost about £20-25 a head: they do various set-menu options at lower cost.

Two quibbles from me: first, they add 12.5% service charge automatically but the credit card machine then asks you if you want to add a gratuity as well. I know lots of restaurants do this, but it still irritates. Second, the owner is very jolly and attentive, but this can feel a bit pushy sometimes - I'm not a fan of being accosted on the pavement when I'm simply reading the menu. (Service was otherwise fine - waitresses are very helpful). Sorting these would add an extra star.

Update: 20-09-2007

A recent visit confirmed this experience - nice food, friendly waitress, but the owner/manager spoiled the evening by being over attentive but not actually terribly helpful. They also put bacon in a vegetarian dish, despite reassurances it would not contain meat, although this was changed straight away when the mistake came to light.
