Basically, I agree with everything “dmj1962” said concerning the place.
• Beer: “dmj1962” is also correct that the Dunkles (dark) is the uniquer and better of the 2. For a country so steeped in beer history, you’d think more brewpubs would exist. I brewed my own beer in the USA for over 10 years, and it’s amazing as to the ignorance of beer styles other than lager, pilsner, wheat and bock beers by Germans. Saying that, the “12 Aposteln” doesn’t rectify that, for both the helles and dunkels beers are top fermenting lagers like 95% of all other German beers. Nonetheless, in a country that used to have over 3,000+ breweries, (Frankfurt has historically been a beer wasteland dominated by both Binding and Henning. I remember in 1985 being in utter rapture in finding a bar near the Hauptwache that served Jever!), the “12 Aposteln” still takes the utter safe route and brews only lagers. Still, it’s awfully good beer.
• Food: I ate there for dinner only, & it’s mostly grilled beef and other cuts of meat in large, tasty Balkan portions. I and friends (a Croatian immigrant among them) all loved their dishes. You will leave enthralled if you order from their Croatian menu.
• Atmosphere: In the cellar, I’d describe it at internal rustic farmhouse. It’s funky, century-old brick cellar walls & lots of nicknack’s that look straight out of a Balkan movie. But… that’s only downstairs in the cellar. The music was weird and didn’t match the setting, though, for it was more in the pop-techno area.
• The ground floor looks like your typical German-style kneipe (bar). Nothing unique really and very little of the wonderful funkiness that awaits you downstairs. The only caveat: downstairs is the smoking section, and it is VERY smoky, which as a non-smoker made me feel unjustly having to chose between the wonderful cellar’s coziness or the boring smoke-free atmosphere.

A cosy pub which brews its own beer, and with very traditional decor, a few minutes' walk north of Konstablerwache U-bahn station. It's on a small side-street, so it is a little hard to find, but worth the effort.

Despite the mediaeval-sounding name, however, this is a relatively modern venture as a brew-pub. The building has three levels, with the main room on the ground floor, a beer-cellar with stone arches, and another dining room upstairs.

They brew two regular beers, one light, one dark, called appropriately enough, Zwölf Apostel Bräu Hell, and Zwölf Apostel Bräu Dunkel. (I'd recommend both.) They also do seasonal beers. The food menu is a mix of traditional, hearty German and Croatian dishes, with a stunningly good choice of set lunch menus for under €8 for three courses. The said three course lunch, with beer, was thus just over €11 each, including service. Service was friendly and efficient.

It seemed deservedly popular with a mixed crowd of friends, business types and shoppers.
