St. Paul’s is another “don’t miss it” sight. I suppose it’s really more than a “sight”: it’s a house of religion which seems to have transcended religion. The history of the site is overwhelming (there has been a cathedral to St. Paul on this site since 604 AD!). The current building (now 300 years old) has been recently cleaned, and is truly stunning. As others have commented, if you are up to walking a LOT of stairs, take the trip up to the top of the dome. The views from the outside of the top are unbelievable, plus you’ll be able to point out to friend and family where you stood. The outstanding efforts of Londoners to protect St. Paul’s during WWII should also be remembered. I also appreciate the American Memorial Chapel, which is dedicated to American service members, based in Britain, who died in WWII.

I think it is worth the admission charge (10 pounds for adults) to be able to thoroughly tour the cathedral. If you are watching your budget, or if you’d simply like an inspiring experience, you can go to Evensong (daily) or services on Sunday for free. Don’t miss St. Paul’s!

St Paul’s is the cathedral of the Diocese of London. The Diocese is made up of five episcopal areas: Willesden, Edmonton, Stepney, London and Kensington.
The 1695 organ which Mendelssohn once played is still in use.
Jean Tijou’s beautiful wrought iron gates of 1700 still separate the quire from the ambulatory.
One of the best known parts of Westminster Abbey, Poets’ Corner can be found in the South Transept. It was not originally designated as the burial place of writers, playwrights and poets; the first poet to be buried here, Geoffrey Chaucer, was laid to rest in Westminster Abbey because he had been Clerk of Works to the palace of Westminster, not because he had written the Canterbury Tales.

When I was about 16 years old my cousin and I went to St Pauls and we went to the very top. I am told no-one has been allowed to do this for 25 years.
We went as far as you can go and then a verger let us up. There were 3 or maybe 4 wooden ladders. VERY scary as it was straight down to the ground if we slipped. I thnk my blood pressure went up and I got hot and shaky but I wriggles my head and shoulders through a tiny space and I was at the very top of the dome where the cross is on top. I have never forgotten it. I was right inside the gilded bit under the ball and cross actually..could get no higher.

A couple of years ago I stood in the cafe of the Tate Modern looking across the Millenium Bridge and remembered what Prince Charles said about the real London now being hidden by Tower blocks. (You certainly have no view, as you once did, from London Bridge).
It was pouring with rain as I waited for my alloted time for the Hopper exhibition and I watched crowds crossing the bridge. Hundreds of umbrellas and a tiny gap in the buildings with a bit of St Pauls showing through. It was like the Umbrellas of Cherburgh (sp). So beautiful and for once I had no camera. I would have loved to photograph that and turned it into a painting.

I guess I should review some of the building. Go to the crypt for there are the tombs and memorials of such historic figures as Admiral Nelson, Churchill and the Duke of Wellington. Christopher Wren himself is there.
I remember as an art student shocking my friends by jumping up and down on Sir Joshua Reynolds tomb because he invented art schools..I was having a bad day! I intend to do it to Karl Marx one day as so much education had his theories and I didn’t agree with most of it.

It has seen many great occasions too. Well worth going and visiting.

Perched centrally just off Fleet Street and visible from just about anywhere in town and off the South Bank, St Paul’s is truly impressive. Completed in the 1700s after the original cathedral was destroyed in the great fire of 1666, the building is beautiful done with superb detail and beautiful carvings and decorations inside.
The church is open to the public at around £10 every day. If you go during mass times though, entrance is free. So grab a seat, get in touch with your spiritual side and marvel at its beauty!

Ok, everyone of course described how this gem designed by the master architect Christopher Wren is a must-see, how beautiful it is and all. But I'd like only to reinforce how the view from the top of this church is one of the most beautiful views from London. I know there are way too many steps - not for the faint-hearted - but believe me: it's worth. London is even more majestic from up there.

A very cool thing about my life in London is that I get to walk by St Paul’s on a fairly regular basis – and that I can see its dome from several vantage points in my neighbourhood. It’s gorgeous, gracious, commanding and truly glorious. I especially love the views as crossing the Millennium Bridge from South Bank. The view from the Tate Modern Members Room is phenomenal too.

Everyone loves St Pauls- How can you not, especially if you've ever seen Mary Poppins? Classic!

The architecture is magnificent, and best viewed from many angles- outside, inside, bottom and top. I'd suggest wandering around the outside, taking in the gardens and gargoyles and everything. Then go inside, you do have to pay except on Sundays, and wander around the ground floor. Don't miss climbing to the top though- I know its a lot of stairs, pace yourself! Of course there is the whispering gallery, although I never quite got that to work. But make sure you get yourself to the balcony on top- the view is definitely worth it, and on a sunny day the city looks magical. Don't forget to look up when you've gotten down and realize how far you just climbed!

Its a kid-friendly place, but if you're going to climb you probably want those kids to be able to climb too- not the best place to be dragging around a pram!

St. Pauls is another London landmark most memorable for withstanding the bomb raids over London during WW2.
In a constant state of refurbishment, the cathedral begins to look more renewed as layers of London grime and pollution are sandblasted off the walls.
The ultimate view in London is perhaps perched up on the dome of the St. Pauls Cathedral with a 360º view of the entire town, truly breathtaking.
The church inside is quite beautiful as well with high and vast ceiling space decorated in immaculate paintings and fresco's as well as the rose tinted windows common in Cathedrals.
I've sadly never been to a service on a Sunday.
Do visit....!
