We live in Whitby (on the West Side), and used to regularly cross the bridge to visit Mr Chips when we fancied a Fish & Chip Supper. We have not had any reason to complain about the food and, the portion sizes are just right for us – we realise that Whitby portions are small compared with ‘Estate’ Chip Shop portions in many Towns and Cities.
However, as of late the attitude of the staff stinks.
I do not wish to be served by a surly teenager(?) with a face like a slapped a*se, so I have taken my custom elsewhere.
Mr Chips, Good Food – But the attitude of your staff should embarrass you.
We will not use you again.
Excellent fish and chips. Had to wait about 10 minutes to get through the door but this is a testament to how fresh it was. The small and medium sized portions do appear to be roughly the same size, so save yourself the £1.90 difference! Excellent batter, very fresh tasting fish and great chips. They have some interesting sustainable fish options, too, which would probably be more popular if they weren’t more expensive than Cod and Haddock.
It’s good, simple, fish and chips. All you want from a place like this, really!
Recommended.

Arrived in whitby for the first time this evening with my husband emmanuel, we were recomended to come along to MISTER CHIPS..so we thought wed go! we waited almost 10mins for a table as the resturant was VERY busy, the waitress/s made us feel VERY WELCOME to wait, once being showed to our seats we were offerd a drink to warm us up by the VERY POLITE lady, (who we later found out was the owner of the resturant, sara! ) we were served tea from there large selection of fruit teas.. the night contined & the atmosphere was FANTASTIC. our meal was simply 1st class. i had king scollops to start followed by a ribeye steak, my husband had a tiger prawns in sweet chilli sauce followed by a LUXERY fishermans casserole.. the service was brilliant & the staff were so friendly not just to us but noticably to all the customers. we carnt thank the staff enough for our BEAUTIFUL experiance & will certanly be back VERY soon... Well done to all at mister chips!

Me and my husband ate in the restaurant and had the medium fish and chips with a pot of tea. The portions were small - usually I cannot finish a full portion but was still peckish after our meal. Also thought the fish was watery. Not too impressed with the staff either - not very friendly... We won't be going again.

After a 2 hour journey to Whitby to treat ourselves to Fish and Chips we finally decided on "Mister Chips" restaurant. As it was full we went to the take away section as it was pleasant enough to enjoy them outside. After paying our £12.60 for fish and chips twice with curry sauce on the side we sat down to enjoy...this is where things went horribly wrong. I could only describe the fish as "white"...there the similarity to haddock ended. Tasteless grease and watered down sauce would be my description of what followed. Thankfully the portions were so meagre the seagulls were spared!!! Obviously trading on their 2009 reviews I can only describe this over priced food as "dissapointing". Thank goodness for cheese on toast.

On a recent visit to the restaurant, the quality of the food (plaice & chips, haddock & chips) was excellent however our visit was spoiled by having to wait outside a rope barrier (the restaurant was half-empty) whilst staff walked by for over 10 minutes ignoring us.
Another disappointment was being refused slices of lemon for the 3 members of our party who ate the medium haddock - we were told 'you only get lemon with the large haddock’! Why?

If in Whitby and we want Take Away Fish and chips we always now go to Mister Chips. The service (length of queue)is reasonable , the price similar to others and the fish is fresh, tasty and in good batter.

We had a takeaway of fish, chips and mushy peas on Saturday, after looking at the quality and price of many of the other fish and chip shops in Whitby. They were the best fish and chips we have had for many years and very reasonably priced. Freshly cooked, beautiful white fish in a delicious batter, and 'proper’ chips. Excellent.

You can tell how good the fish and chips are by the way people are happy to queue at busy times. The batter and fish are absolutely yummy and we usually buy them out and try to sit near the harbour. Sometimes we drive up and sit near the abbey to eat them -heaven! They are freshly cooked that they lose nothing on the short drive. There are various “specials” which are cooked to order. You can buy hot and cold drinks. The cafe is a treat too and do a good fish platter. A year or two back we went to Whitby and headed for Mr. chips and they were closed for a refit. We were gutted but have made up for it since!
