This is a comfortable and well appointed pub in an area of outstanding natural beauty. Visiting the Golden Galleon is a nice way to end a walk around Friston Forest or along the Seven Sisters.
The beer is always fresh. I normally choose Harveys Sussex Best Bitter, although the pub recently had a beer tent, serving a number of quality real ales.
On a Sunday evening, after a walk around Friston Forest, I ordered Winter Vegetable soup, with bread and butter. The soup tasted good and contained fresh, crunchy vegetables. The bread was nice too. However, the soup was only a few degrees above lukewarm.
I could hear the kitchen staff fannying about and making silly noises, which suggested that they weren’t really concentrating on preparing food. They got the soup half right, but it does need to be hot.
The Mediterranean Vegetable Risotto was quite good. The shallots, red peppers and courgettes were crunchy and cooked properly. It tasted fairly good, although the chef was perhaps a little heavy on the garlic.
The staff were polite, but they do need to concentrate more and stop forming small groups to discuss matters relating to their own lives when diners are sitting eating their meals. I feel as if I am going into their environment, rather than somewhere I can be myself in.
I’ve given the Golden Galleon two and a half stars, because of the issues relating to poor concentration and serving decent food at lowish temperatures. They simply need to be more professional and think about their customers.
We often walk to this pub from Seaford Head via Cuckmere Haven- a great walk for building up an appetite. The pub is often very busy especially on sunny days and it can take quite a while to be served. However if you're in no rush it's lovely to sit out in their big garden and enjoy sunshine and the views.
The food is nice. The chocolate brownie pudding was to die for. Most of the meals are fairly good value for money.
The ladies toilets are mouldy and disgusting, best avoided in my opinion.
Overall a nice family pub in a great location but best to give it a miss if you're looking for quick service.

A fantastic location but the food is dull and tastless and the service poor. This used to be a great little pub with its own micro-brewery but has really gone down-hill. The owner needs to ditch the pre-prepared food and buy in good local food cooked to order. Could be so much better

For location, this place could easily get a 5* rating, situated at Exceat in the heart of the cuckmere valley. However, was sorely disappointed by the taste and quality of the food that i received. Often gets very busy. Long queues of people ordering food and drink at the bar caused chaos. Toilets are dingy and yuk. ITs worth only visiting once, in my opinion, and, it will make you wonder how they make any money.
