The Thomas Cubitt

I love the Cubitt on a Sunday. It serves decent food, burger has improved a lot. I just find that it can be very loud and sometimes it feels like I have to fight to keep myself involved in conversation.

This is a decent-sized gastro-pub in the heart of Belgravia, not far from Victoria station.

The interior has been modernised with trendy pale green 'distressed' wooden panelling downstairs, and a more formal dining room upstairs. It's actually one of the better places to drink in the area, though, as others have said, most go there to eat. But it's a good to know place given the dearth of decent drinking venues around Victoria. They have a couple of hand-pumps (one serving nice Deucars) and also serve a Suffolk cider ("cyder") which is very refreshing. Beer is about £3.50 a pint - but, then, you are in Belgravia...

On nice days the frontage screens are rolled back and there's a lot of pavement table seating which makes for a nice sunny day venue. There's table service throughout, which can be a bit hit and miss when they're busy, and it does get quite busy at lunchtimes and after work. I've not eaten upstairs, but reports are good: again, eating downstairs in the 'pub' part gets more mixed reviews, particularly about speed of service. But if you've got the time, it's a fairly relaxed venue.

Always good for a meal and drink, particularly at weekends. The food is good quality as is the people watching. It does get busy in the early evenings though.

Love this place in the heart of smart Belgravia. I've mostly eaten in the downstairs bar / restaurant. Good quality food with prompt and attentive service. Price wise okay for this expensive area of London. They also serve rarely seen Deuchars IPA (from Edinburgh Caledonian brewery) on tap. Recommend the fish and chips. It's very good. Great atmosphere. Be warned it does get packed at peak times.

Great. A cross between a bustling pub and a smart restaurant. Relaxed atmosphere, quite a buzz, quality food, great service. Main courses about £10-15.

Had a business lunch in the upstairs part (the menus are different). Fairly steep prices and definitely for those on expenses, but the food was good and service efficient. Given the general expense of restaurants in that area it's a decent bet for a business lunch.

Warm atmosphere, great interior decoration and excellent drinks. Highly recommended.

This traditional and tastefully styled pub is full of character, which is first evident when
entering the large glass doorways. The floor to ceiling windows enhance the modern aspect,
giving the interior a very light and pleasant feel, while the cleverly infused traditional
detailing reminds me I am in a pub in the heart of London. In contrast to the styling,
the menus are filled with the best traditional pub food has to offer, I recommend the Sunday Roast.

I work close to the Cubitt and I had to mark it down for the simple reason that they don’t let you book tables, yet they are clearly a restaurant rather than a pub (pubs have areas just for people to sit and drink, right? At the Cubitt it’s all dining). This is intensely frustrating if you want to organise a work do, or even a simple weekday lunch for a few friends from the office. It’s not cheap, the food is pretty good but I’ve had better for the price, and the service can be pretty hit and miss. Also, don’t confuse the downstaris Cubitt with the upstairs Cubitt - different menu upstairs, and even more expensive. They’re always full by 1pm, which is, I’m sure, why they don’t bother with bookings, but these policies win them no friends, adn they should watch ou tin the economic downturn - there are plenty of cheaper places to eat in the area.

I have been going to the Thomas Cubitt since it opened and still find it great for lunch in the area, especially on Saturdays when there aren’t many other places you can sit and relax in in Belgravia. The downstairs pub/restaurant is always busy and very atmospheric, although you can’t book tables, it can be a bit of a wait, but usually something does come up. Good mix between those eating and those just drinking. Prices are standard of a gastropub. They have a good seasonal menu, which does change frequently. While I’m not a huge fan of their current selection, their salt and pepper squid was fantastic and their burger is always a good staple. They also offer a changing selection of cocktails (although not a huge selection). Service however has been getting increasingly sloppy, especially at busy periods, and I have waited longer than one should to be served. Good sunday lunch roast selection.

I was in Belgravia today for a lunchtime meeting with a client. Having walked up and down Elizabeth Street and found very few restaurants we decided to eat at Thomas Cubitt. Sadly we were disapointed with the service we recieved. The waiter got us drinks very quickly. But after I had ordered I asked the waitress after 30 mins to check on our order. She informed me that the kitchen had not recieved it! When it did eventually arrive I was disapointed with my Veggie Burger. It had very little character and was served witha few chips in a small container. Not what we were expecting from a Belgravia establishment! Now the place was very busy and I suspect this may have been an isolated mistake. We did get free wine however. But the apolagy was pretty poorly delivered. I may go again. Every restaurant deserves a second chance!

The Thomas Cubitt dining experience is simply excellent. You’re a little unsure of whether you’re at the right place when you arrive at what looks like just another pub. Once you find the little staircase that takes you up to the dining room however, any uncertainty floats away into one of the most pleasurable dining experiences I’ve had in a while.

The atmosphere is classical, and simple. The dining tables are big and well separated allowing that wonderful feeling of privacy in a busy room without having to shout your way into someone’s ear. The staff attentive, have a tendency to appear only when needed and do not require instructions to be repeated - a luxury which tends to be reserved for Michelin rated restaurants.

The food is great traditional upmarket restaurant fare - racks of lamb, scallops - that sort of thing, and is executed remarkably well. And the best bit is the bill - at 40 quid for a 3 course meal you could easily end up paying twice this for a much shoddier experience.

If only there were more places like this…..

I went to the upstairs dining room. Was expecting something a bit more rustic but white tablecloths and very pleasant light-filled room. Very good service. Can't remember having better. Friendly, knowledgeable. Discrete. Scalops to start with didn't expect to be so beautifully presented. Cooked perfectly. Partridge for main course. Cooked as it should be. And then the bill for lunch came to £50 for two. Was I dreaming? no I was not. A terrific place. i will be going back

Although often beset by the lunchtime rabble of nearby Google/American Express offices, this smart pub has the air of a Belgravia boozer with the scent of old money that permeates SW1. Really good selection of champagne and a delicious chablis that glides down very easily, the pine nut and chicken salad is my personal favourite.
Top tip, get there early on a Friday to grab a table and avoid the crowds later on!

This place was recently taken over and refurbished. Apparently it used to be quite a nice little nook but it seems to have lost a lot of personality in the last 6 months.

In its defence, the Thomas Cubitt does a great rib eye steak. In fact most of the food here is nice. It’s the staff, the crowd and the general atmosphere that lets this place down.

If you are the kind of person who thumbs through the FT on a Friday evening wearing beige slacks, deck shoes, a pink shirt and a cricket jumper knotted around your shoulders – this place is definitely for you. If you’re into live music, buzzy atmosphere and beers other than Becks, I’d stay well clear.
