The castle is thought to date back to the 13th centuary,it used to look over the river Don.It was built in 1270 by Thomas Lrd Furvival & once held Mary queen of Scots for 14 years from 1570 by George Talbot(the 6th Earl of Shrewsbury)
The demolition of the castle was done by the roundheads in1648 & now most of the ruins lay underneath the current castle market,you can stand next to one of the remaining parts of a wall to get a feel of what it was like,there are leaflets you are given & booklets you can purchase cheap enough showing artists impressions of the castle,so once you see where this part of the wall etc was you get a good image of it all.You also get to listen to a tape telling all its history & it sure would be nice if they got around to unburrying the rest of the ruins for us all to see
