I visited the Ship Inn with my family, basically the selection on the menu isn't very good (only 1 kind of steak which is rump). I have to say the service is good but the food was bland! The chicken wrapped in bacon with chorizo in the middle was tasteless, the chips were terrible as were the onion rings which tasted like batter. Steak was over done as was the gammon! Over priced horrid food. I think the Harvester is a million times better than the Ship Inn I wont be visiting the Ship Inn again.

I have eaten in the ship inn some time ago and vowed to not go there again however last nite i found myself there again. There has been a change ownership and the service food and house wine were exellent. I will be going again in the near future. Congratulations to the new owners.

Just eaten here for the third time and can't fault it. Tonight's meal for me was Tomato and Basil Soup followed by fillet of Sea Bass with garlic butter, while my companion had Crayfish Cocktail and a Rump Steak.

A basket of delicious bread was provided immediately and our drinks and water also came promptly. We both had the Abbot Ale, which was in excellent condition.

My soup was perfect, I can't imagine better at any price, anywhere - and I've eaten in a lot of restaurants in many countries. My main was delicious as was the thick steak, cooked exactly as requested; the vegetables (broccoli and carrots) were perfectly cooked, the chips were excellent; in fact, this is one of the very few places where I order chips.

Service was friendly and prompt throughout.

And the price for this delicious evening meal? £10 each! Which is the price of the 2 course evening special. This is the best food for the price that I know of in the greater Cardiff area.

The decoration and furnishings could be improved in a few small ways (better to have nothing on the tables than a plastic flower), but for great food at an extremely reasonable price, you can do no better.

Please note: the inn is just off the junction of the new A473 bypass on 'Crown Hill', and not as shown on the Qype map at the time of writing. Ignore 2-3 year old reviews as it has changed radically since then. They do not serve food on a Sunday night.

I'm still a little undecided on The Ship. I didn't find it as instantly welcoming as The Crown (at the top of the same hill), but the surroundings were very nice. There's a lot of roadworks going on at the front of the pub whilst the new Church Village Bypass is being built so hopefully when the new road is built this will attract more custom for them.

The Ship Inn

It might strike you as a strange name for a pub in mid Glamorgan miles from the sea The name has only a oblique nautical reference and I am not sure that it is true. In the past Farming used to be the mainstay of the local community, then an increasing emphasis was laid on mining development in small level pits There were many of them and among them were the ‘Duffryn Dowlais’ and ‘The Ship’ the Duffryn Dowlais was the old name of the present pub. Both names were names of the small collieries in the area and the only connection with the sea is said that ‘The Ship’ colliery produced high quality anthracite coal which was used by ships of the Royal Navy. But maybe that’s just a pub story !
The ship has, as many pubs , suffered modernisation over the years for example there was an excellent skittles alley which has been converted into a bar long and thin It is now generally populated by people who appear just marginally over the legal age for drinking alcohol - nothing wrong with that of course ! But for me the music being played in the skittles bar is far too loud for me ( conceivably because I am well over the legal drinking age) I drink in the bar where there is a complete spectrum of ages and relatively music free. The beer generally is priced at the higher end of the average in this area . For example Stella is £3 a pint. The pub makes up for this by having a cosy atmosphere and the fact that a new extension has been built as a restaurant so that one can have a drink in a pub atmosphere after a meal.
I have not sampled the food but the restaurant is quite popular which suggests that the menu is to be recommended. There is a large car park but be warned The traffic police are quite active in this area.
