The “Floozy in the Jacuzzi” as the fountain at Victoria Square is known by locals (or so I am told) is my favourite site in Birmingham due to the fact that when I moved here from the north 3 years ago, it was the first thing I saw upon entering the city alone…...A very drunk woman was paddling in it at the time! There are two things that should be noted here….1) it was 9am and 2) It was November!! She must have been freezing! Consequently, it always makes me smile whenever I see it.

For me, the whole area around Victoria Square makes me feel like I’m actually in “Birmingham”...It typifies the image I had of the “big city” being a small town girl. It never fails to impress me. Definately worth a visit.

It also makes a lovely place to sit with some lunch if its sunny (paddling not recommended) and there are lots of convenient food places nearby to grab some food from…..beware of pigeons though!!

Walking through Victoria Square I always think ‘this is the perfect example of how much people underestimate this city’. The square, and its surrounding side streets (including Colmore Row) easily compete with other European cities in terms of beautiful architecture. It’s a million miles away from what most Londoners seem to assume Birmingham is like when I talk to them.

The square has been host to everything from an urban beach to the much-hyped Christmas market, and it doesn’t matter what time of year you visit, you’ll always find people sat on the steps or around the fountain, enjoying the peace away from the Bullring or watching the news on the big screen.

I still have no idea what the Iron Man is there for, though…

The town hall is a beautifully, structured buliding. I had my awards evening with my college and it was my first time at town hall and I thought it was beautiful!

It is spacious and creates a holy, calming atmosphere. It has many seats for visitors and a large organ which is quite outstanding. I really enjoyed my time there but i did feel a tiny bit cold…still a lovely experience! :)

Victoria Square is a central point of Birmingham's city centre. It is surrounded by some of the most important buildings of civic life: The Council House, The Art Museum and The Public Library. Wintertime sees it decorated as part of a Frankfurt Market and the warmer months see the waters of a large central fountain flowing around a massive statue of a woman. No matter the season, the warm glow of the television is never far from Victoria Square with an outdoor TV facing the library transmitting news nonstop to the people.

Since its closure in 1996, this Grade 1 listed Town Hall has undergone serious restoration and has now reopened. This place with all is now open for various concerts and events each year and will involve local and international performers. Not only is it a great building that stands out in the city center of Birmingham, it also now has a seating arrangement of 1,100.

Birmingham has always been bursting with Civic Pride, despite (or perhaps because of) the jokes made at its expense by other cities in the UK. It's elegant Victorian centre was largely spared by World War II, but its post-war rebuilding became a byword for poor urban planning, with buildings bulldozed to provide for a huge and inhuman inner-ring road. Even the Civic centre at its heart wasn't spared redevelopment, with its new library - one of Europe's largest - a clumsy example of concrete brutalist architecture.

But the last 20 years have seen a transformation and, while the ring-road is still there (albeit without the grim pedestrian underpasses), Victoria Square has been refurbished and enlivened by some great, tongue-in-cheek sculptures, most famously the statue of life, situated in the huge fountain - better known as 'The Floozie in the Jacuzzi'.

Even the library has had a bit of a make-over, but the prize goes to its 19th-century gems: the Council House, containing the city's museum and art gallery and council chamber (dating from 1870), and even more magnificently, the vast neo-classical Council House, one of the UK's oldest and largest debating and concert venues. Completed in 1833, it is one of Europe's oustanding neo-classical buildings. It is just emerging from a huge refurbishment programme, its facades now a dazzling white.

Rather quaintly, given Birmingham's location in the centre of Britain, the small square in front of the library has been turned into a beach, complete with palms, deckchairs and a huge TV screen. It seems as odd as it is clearly popular...
