1 review of Aythorpe Roding Windmill in English
A large, 18th-century post mill looked after by Essex County Council. From outside, it looks very much like your average post mill, but go inside and you’re in for a surprise.
This mill was much improved in the Victorian age of engineering enthusiasm. Much of the machinery is made of cast iron rather than wood. It even has a steam engine. The mill enthusiast who showed me round described it proudly as the “Rolls Royce of Windmills”, but I found it strange that something so totally designed to be wind powered should have a steam engine.
It is a fascinating place to visit nonetheless. If you are lucky enough to have the same guide we had you will get a very detailed and thorough explanation. He was really patient with the party of four- and five-year-olds we had with us and made sure that each of them left with a clear grasp of the purpose and operation of the mill.
It is open to the public on the last Sunday of the month, from April to September. Or contact the Council to arrange a bespoke tour for a group.
