Review of Mellos Restaurant from 21 February 2009

This diner hasn't changed since the '50s, I'm sure of it. Six or seven booths; round, spinning stools at the bar, a grill and a fryer right there in front of you: it's brilliant. Burgers, club sandwiches, milkshakes, poutine, smoked meat sanwiches, turkey and mashed potatoes, and - of course - big grilled breakfasts. You'll pay about $10 and you'll be stuffed beyond capacity. I used to go in here for club sandwiches so often the staff started calling me The King of Clubs.

It's that kind of neighbourhood place, too. It's at the seedier end of the Byward Market party area, and it's open 24 hours a day. You get to see some characters in here, that's for sure, whether they're drinking to eat away their intoxication or getting ready for the night shift on the corner.

There's nothing healthy to eat here. This is greasy diner extraordinaire, and a great slice of humanity to hang out with.
