The Bickleigh - Crediton Road

This road, the A3072, is one of the unsung scenic wonders of England. I have driven up or down it more times than I have had hot dinners and still some of the scenery takes my breath away.
It starts with a fairly steep windy climb up a hill from the top of which you look down on the village of Bickleigh and across to hills that show beautiful perspective.
The road continues, up and down, winding this way and that, through valleys and among hills high and low. Every now and then the hills open up to expose an apparently never-ending vista of fields and the rare dwelling.
Approaching the hamlet of Cadbury, the road circles round the hill fort of Cadbury Castle (one of several with the same name in England) and then straightens for the fastest part of the road before reaching the highest point, a tight double bend with a vertiginous drop, and stunning view, before the road again straightens and narrows and drops, passing through hedges on both sides before breaking out into a startling, breathtaking landscape of Mid Devon, stretching away to Dartmoor in the distance. Once down this hill, the nature of the road changes, winding through hills, past old farmsteads, up hiull, down dell, before the final fast drop down a long, steep hill, into Crediton.
