Right in the middle of student district, you can imagine what sort of hippies turn up here. Yup, rich ones.
It's basically fairly bland food (about as good as any vegetarian food you're going to get in the West) at above-average prices. Still though, it feels healthy and it's nice to have the alternative.
On The Eighth Day is a vegetarians wet-dream in the shape of bricks and mortar.
Located on the busy Oxford Road, you'll find everything you need to avoid meaty things here. Years ago, I used to frequent the place for the very reasonable and very tasty vege-chilli. It was a great place to sit in the window and have a pot of tea and idle away a few hours.
However, since the refurb, 'Eighth Day' has gone from a laid back hang-out to a super-slick supermarket.
That's not a bad thing as such... the cafe is still there, although it's underground now, so no watching the world go by with a cup of tea.
As such, I no longer have a need to visit the place anymore as I'm not in the market for healthfood snack bars or TVP.
Those that I know that ARE in the market for such grub have complained about how expensive it is.
However, it's a good thing that this place exists. It does stock a lot of stuff you can't get elsewhere... however, with that, it's no good for someone like me who doesn't really care.
A cool little place though.
Lovely place for healthy and orgnic snacks. Good for vegitarians and also reasonably priced.
Brilliant place to shop and eat in Manchester especially if you are vegetarian or vegan.
The shop offers plenty of choice and sells a range of food and health products including vitamins and suplements, wine, fresh food, grains, meat and dairy substitutes as well as a deli section with hot and cold pasties and cakes. My favourite is the Banana and Walnut cake.
In the basement is a vegetarian cafe which serves healthy but hearty meals for a reasonable price. The menu includes stews, soups, deserts and salads and you can also get a range of fresh juices and smoothies.
This is my favourite place in Manchester to eat and shop!
Conveniently located and offers a good range of health and vegetarian food that it is hard to find elsewhere.
I often pop in for natural healthfood bars to snack on, berries and cocoa nibs.
However it is very expensive and I have seen some of the items it sells cheaper in more mainstream health food shops so take care not to get carried away.
They also have a fresh food counter selling items such as quiches which are a healthy alternative for lunch when you are out and about.
All in all I feel this shop is a positive step in the right direction, Manchester needs more shops like this.
There is a fabu;ous range of food in this well-located store. They offer all the supplements you can think of and more. They have organic-jam-packet this store to the rafters with conscience swelling goodies. I especially like the vegan cola bottles which make you feel justified in eating sweets.
As well as ingredients they also offer some good solid vegetarian food and there falafel pitta is more than excellent. The cafe and take out services are both good, with friendly and knowledgeable staff.
They stock natural cosmetics, and there is a rail for your bike just outside.
expensive and overrated. its ok but im not going wild on this place. Also your guranteed to see your lecturers here, so dont skive off and come here! lol
I used to frequent this just before the refit - I love it’s 'free range co-operative’ look, the look which gently speaks 'just outside downtown’. Reminds me of a shop you’d see in Seattle or Toronto…there should be more of these!
At the time I was vegetarian, but though I’m no longer meat free I still pop in here from time to time (just as I do Unicorn) as I find the 'culture’ interesting to look at, investigate further and chow down.
This store is situated on Oxford Road just around the MMU…a few further shop fronts down you will find several pizza joints (my usual nightcap on the rare drunken excursion) and Johnny Roadhouse music store.
'Not’ meat products and unpronounceable legumes are found in abundance on the ground floor, whilst below is the vege cafe which is always worth popping into. The Vegetarian Society was founded in Manchester (spring gardens area) by a gentleman by the name of 'Cowherd’, so I’m sure he’d be in here every other day to sample the delights.
Im not a vegetarian but i go in here with a friend who is,the food is absoulutely delicious really filling and tasty. The shop is cool too, lots of unusual stuff you can`t find in other places.
nikfry Wow!!! is this still open. I went to Uni in Manchester and used to love their veggies pasties!!! yum

Good location and good selection of items. But some items are quite expensive and you can buy the same one cheaper at sainsbury….
great selection of fairtrade products and nice to nip in for a coffee.Friends a vegetarian and she raves over the place. The smoothies are good too, great for hangover cures and getting some natural goodness back in you
Great shop/cafe for all the vegetarian/vegans in Manchester- sometimes when bands play at the Academy , and they are vegan-they pop into the cafe for breakfast! Wide variety indeed. Easy to get to on the bus!
Eight Day is a ‘most definite’ stop for all vegetarians, or indeed lovers of veggie food. There is a wide selection of products on offer, pretty much covering the whole spectrum. Always popular with students due to its close proximity to Manchester Met. University, the shop continues to thrive year after year. Occasionally there can be long-ish waits at the till, but I don’t think this ever gets bad enough to be considered a major bug-bear. I would whole heartedly recommend Eight Day to anyone wishing to get healthy and enjoy the taste at the same time.
Conveniently located on Oxford Road (and my workplace), this is a regular haunt for me. It offers up all the usual from a vegetarian/health food store, however, I have found that here I always receive a warm and helpful welcome. The fresh produce is often ranging and always of good quality. The downstairs cafe boasts a fully vegetarian/vegan menu which has never failed to impress. A must for vegetarians and vegans when stocking up on the essentials but there is also plenty to be bought by more body/environmentally conscious individuals. Some products can be a tad on the pricey side but Im always looking out for bargains which are frequently advertised. The fresh food counter is great for a healthy, tasty lunch-time snack. Please bring your spare empty plastic bags for others to recycle :D
This shop has stocks just about every vegetarian alternative that you can think of. If at all you are thinking of converting to a vegetarian lifetyle then this the place for you to shop for your groceries. They even have an alternative for minced meat which is really good and yogurt made out of soya milk. However, the prices tend to be higher than the average as you would expect. But definetely a highly recommended place to visit.
Eighth Day is on a corner on Oxford Street and I always used to beer in as my bus whizzed past. I was delighted when I finally paid it a visit and have been ducking in ever since.
On the ground floor, there's an independent healthfood/fair trade shop offering most goodies to keep a veggy/vegan/ fairtrader happy. The gem- the cafe is just downstairs and although it's now not quite as fab as it used to be, the food is still great and has been nominated for loads of awards over the years.
Something that is rare for a cafe- they offer fake-bacon butties....Their smoothies are great too. Pop in for a lovely surprise!
great veggie shop & cafe. try the homemade chilli & jacket potatoe & you'll never eat meat again!
