7 reviews of The Great House in English
i just had a wonderful weekend with my husband at The Great House in the lovely Welsh countryside.
We arrived on friday, and were visiting friends who lived near by for dinner, so had a delightful little afternoon tea which we enjoyed out in the garden (yes, it was sunny for the whole weekend!).
The room was lovely and bright and more importantly very clean and well decorated. I would say a great deal of effort has been spent on little extra touches in the room, and this was evident throughout the hotel. You just know that if they look after the hotel this well, they will look after you well too and this was very much the case! The proprietors were away so we didn't get to meet them but Mohammed and James looked after us all weekend and made us feel like we were at home!
On Saturday evening we dined in the restaurant. I had scallops for starter and rack of Welsh lamb for main course, which was melt in the mouth and absolutely delicious. The dessert was perfect - I had chocolate brownie tart with honeycomb ice-cream (all homemade!).
All in all, this was the best weekend away we have had together and we will undoubtedly be returning for another little break away very soon!
I was really impressed with the wamth and atmosphere of this establishment, the staff were very friendly.
I visited the restuarnt and the meal was most satisfactory. The only negative point is that the car park is always full.
A recent reluctant trip to the Great House proved a huge success!!! I have never written a review before but felt it was worth taking the time to write.
From the moment we walked in the door we felt welcome, with the tasteful christmas lights and decorations, (un-like a few years ago, it used to be over the top) the fire was lit, a welcome cosy place from the -5 C outside.
I had Scallops and Black Beef, mmmm... it was melt in the mouth, My friend had the Smoked Salmon and Rack of Lamb, which was cooked perfectly....
And the follow-up of Chocolate Rosanne and Welsh Cheese selction was just the icing on this particular cake.
The atmosphere was very seasonal and happy with pleasant staff.
They have updated their bar since I went last with new leather sofas and chairs. The Bistro has now gone and everyone dines in the main restaurant, another welcome change. Altogether a much better experiance, five stars deserved.....
i have had a meal recently at the Great House and was very impressed, the choice on the menu was very good and the service quick, i was very relaxed in this wonderful old building, i can not find any thing to complain about to be honest.
well done keep it up
This was the third or fourth time we’d stayed here. The service has always been alright and the food reasonable. This time we were given the Dovecot room across the car park which is large and well-appointed with a good bathroom and a capacious sitting area. Top marks for everything except the shower briefly running cold on the morning we left – with snow on the ground!
In the restaurant, we received attentive service and, when we ordered a bottle of wine that was out of stock, the alternative offered was cheaper. The meal was good, although one or two of the dishes were not quite as hot as we’d have liked, indicating that maybe the kitchen was under a bit of pressure. The following day breakfast was first class. It is, admittedly, at the top end of the price range for what it is but I’d go again on the basis of this last visit.
David_Turner …and I’ve been again last evening. Absolutely fine – good room, good breakfast, but top-end pricewise.

I was unimpressed with the service. Our waitress was rude and took forever to bring our drinks. My food was ok, however, the steak my friend ordered was horribly over-cooked and resembled an old boot. I felt that the menu lacked variety and there was only one vegetarian option available.
It was also a bit on the steep side, given the quality of the service and the food. I would not recommend.
Absolutely appalling service and food was rather dreadful. Atmosphere was tense and staff hostile.
We visited in the belief the young Welsh chef of the year worked there, to find out he had left months ago due to abysmal treatment.
This does not surprise me!
I wouldn’t recommend this place to my enemy let alone for an evening of fine dining
