Walked in and and walked straight out again. The women behind the bar gave us such a look it was enough to leave in a second. No place is worth been judged like that. There are plenty more places in Edinburgh center oozing more chracter than this place. I didnt realise that Edinburgh was so exclusive.

Just moved to the area and love this pub!! It is very quirky with bits and pieces hanging up everywhere and things on every shelf dating back years! The staff are very smart and attentive. You get table service to the highest standard! Never been anywhere like it and love how it’s so different!

Extremely poor service and knowledge of malt whisky is pathetic.

Review of Canny Mans from 26 September 2011

A wonderful pub, with one exception – some of the staff. I won’t harp on about the surprising fact that the younger staff seemed to know nothing about whisky, which is obviously an important part of this traditional freehouse’s stock. I can’t comment on the owner as I don’t think he was there. I love this place, its history, community and values, and was excited about taking my friend who was visiting town. I have also myself worked in hospitality for many years. So we were surprised, at the end of a pleasant quiet evening, to be very rudely bawled at by the female Polish bar manager (or senior bar staff member) who told us, with absolutely no precursor to ‘get out, we’re closed now.’ Obviously nobody has told this person about calling time – there was no warning, and we’d long finished our drinks at any rate. Nor was it just me and my friend – she shouted at all the remaining customers. It wasn’t just poor customer service – it was very personally rude. She stood and glared at us like a sour old harpy as we left and it really spoiled the evening. I hope she isn’t there next time I come back.

The most eccentric pub I've ever entered. The way the bartender (waistcoat and all) scanned me from head to foot - in accepting me with my work gear on - to see if I was 'ok'. The plaque outside 'No mobile phones' 'No Backpackers' etc .. The bar is fantastic, with every malt whisky you could dream of. In fact, looking at the bar, you could probably order anything! The place is riddled with stuffed animals and many, many antiques. The memorabilia is breathtaking. There's even a corner of the pub devoted to Winston Churchill. There are very strict rules in here, and the staff seem friendly enough, but I reckon any messing about, severe drunkenness, or wearing the wrong, or scruffy, clothes - and you'll be out on your ear. If you do not suffer from severe paranoia, and can handle the looks the locals - and bar staff - initially give you, then it's worth a visit .. What a unique, and very interesting place ..

Odd wee place and nice enough but not for me. Felt uncomfortable being there and that the regulars were slightly miffed that s stranger had came in. Local pub for local people me thinks.

I dont mind this bar, its quite lovely and has SO much character although it is bordering almost a little on tat.. we were warned before we went that the guy behind the bar is really picky about who comes in and that mobiles are banned so we were a little hesitant to say the least but i had heard lovely things so thought I'd give it a try.

Gorgeous bar, friendly enough staff and the food menu looked gorgeous. Lovely decor traditonal yet quirky and i think they even have a beer garden out back. loads of character give it a try

My favourite pub in Edinburgh. Best whisky selection in town an the perfect environment for sipping. The walls and ceilings are an antique museum.
Not to mention the incredible selection of over 100 smorrebrods (open-face sandwiches).

Canny Man's is well known for its unique character, incredible whisky selection, impeccable service and high standard of clientèle. The interior is decorated by a playful array of oddities and antiques, making it a fine place to enjoy your favourite malt or discover one you've never heard of before.

In addition to their excellent selection of whiskies and champagnes, Canny Man's serves up delicious food - primarily a choice of over 100 different Smørrebrød (open-face sandwiches).

sign above bar reads cheques accepted up to value of £100, very smartly dressed bar staff, sell ales and malt whiskeys, I was asked if I would like popcorn with my pint, flowers on all the tables, display of cigars at bar, displays of different kinds of antiques, displays of different kinds of stuffed animals, books available to read, displays of different champagne bottle types

Yes you can have a cheaper night out in morningside if you so desire, but you wont get the peace and quiet, dedication to service, and generally quirky location to have a quiet drink a nice chat, and possibly make new friends and aquaintences.
The interior decorated much like a tv set of antiques roadshow, the building itself steeped in history and linked to the astley ainsley hospital,
However, order a brandy and how many pubs give it to you in the best crystal, order a good malt and be made to feel special,
as for the no mobile phones GREAT, no disturbances, dress code quite right , if you want to sit in shorts, go to a sports bar, not an institution such as the "CANNY MANS"
by the way i am biaised towards the pub having frequented now for about 16 years. i only go in probably twice a year, but always made to feel at home.

Review of Canny Mans from 16 July 2009

A fantastic pub if not a little pricey, we don’t usually go to this type of pub as it’s a bit more expensive and seems more upper class and almost snobby.

We ordered a Malibu and lemonade and a pint of Best which came to £7.40 which is quite expensive compared to places in town as the average price of Best is around £1.95!

However, the atmosphere (note: we didn’t have any trouble with the bar staff but i wouldn’t say they were the most welcoming) and surroundings made up for it, a nice quiet relaxing pub to have a drink, the pub is rather eccentricly decorated, with instruments, model planes, a big model boat(!) and all sorts of things on the walls and ceiling. My boyfriend said he could spend all day looking around and we both really enjoyed it.

I would say it was a lovely pub with a quiet atmosphere to have a drink, it is a little pricey though.

the best place to have a whisky in edinburgh! traditional, authentic, athmospheric, unique. loved the care they put in serving the whisky, eg the ice cold water kept in ice buckets.

Review of Canny Mans from 19 December 2008

Great pub! So why only two stars? Utterly horrible management. Don’t even consider entering the doors unless you are a middle class conventional clone, as they will ask you to leave unless you are dressed correctly in their eyes, speaking in the right accent, and behaving 'correctly’. Oh, and don’t you dare fail to fill in their obscure food-ordering slips absolutely correctly, or prepare to be soundly scolded by the ridiculously snobbish staff. Pity, the place itself is worth a look, despite the seriously excessive prices. But the people who run it make it a 'never go back’ experience unless you love to be humiliated by snobs.

memoryman Happily, there are still enough of us "snobs" around to ensure that this eccentric bar can stay in business without resorting to the common standards applied in many lesser establishments. If you prefer to dress (& perhaps behave) scruffily, I am sure you know plenty of bars where you feel more at home. Courtesy rules at The Canny Man's!

Ranald It's not "courtesy" for the manager to reply sneeringly if you ask a simple question about their arcane food ordering system, as happened to me. I was being perfectly polite, but confused. Her behaviour was simply rude and obnoxious. THAT is what makes her such an insufferable snob.

Don’t be put off by the brass plaque outside the door, although the owner might be eccentric in his tastes, it’s all in a good cause – providing a nice place to go and have a drink. Great selection of Wines, Ales and Whiskys, with interesting décor (there is ALWAYS something to look at), and good service all add up to a drinking experience from a bye gone age, brought bang up to date for the discerning pub go-er. Just make sure you are dressed casual, but smart – we know someone who was banned for life for wearing a baseball cap.

Review of Canny Mans from 23 November 2008

A very unusual pub! I suspect that the Canny Man’s is pretty unique, and it doesn’t seem to change over the years. The whole place has weird and unusual things hanging from the ceiling and on the walls, ranging from wax models, to bits of car - you certainly wouldn’t be lacking in a subject for discussion, that’s for sure! This used to be a working man’s pub, in fact many moons ago women were not allowed in at all! It used to be termed as a traditional 'spit and sawdust’ bar but I haven’t seen sawdust on the floor for many years, and I suspect if you spit, you’ll be tossed out! It’s become quite expensive and there is a clique of regulars who can, if they so desire, make you feel rather uncomfortable as an outsider, with simply a look. Still, you must visit this pub at least once, just to say you’ve been!

Canny Mans is a very old pub. It is very strange place with all different and unusal things on the wall and celing. Years ago women were not allowed in this pub. They have a note outside telling you the things your not allowed, your not allowed your mobile, or camera in the place. It is quite a cleaky pub though, and it is very expensive, and is upmarket. Didn’t feel it was a very friendly place, as people stared at you if you weren’t a local.
