My friend and I almost skipped this museum. We thought the National Museum (which is in fact attached) would be the interesting one. We couldn’t have been more wrong. We decided to make a quick run through it just to say we’d been there and quickly realized how much more interesting it was. It has 3 levels. To go through every room quickly would take about 4 hours. Like most places in Edinburgh, it closes early (5 or 6pm) so we had to leave and come back another day to finish. Now, it may be due to a lack of seeing good museums in the world but I fell in love with this place. It’s my favorite museum to date. If you go through the room of birds, there is a particularly funny bird known for vomiting on its predators. The museum decided to have vomit coming out of the bird’s mouth and splattering on its encasement. That was the funniest item I’ve ever seen at a museum. The important thing is, it’s FREE and there’s plenty there so, even if you aren’t into museums, you’ll find something there to make it worth the visit.

The Royal Museum is one of Edinburgh's most popular visitor attractions. Its free entry - donations, of course, are very welcome - makes it accessible to all and allows those who wish to visit regularly the freedom to do so without the concern of cost.

Covered by a huge glass roof, the building is large and spacious. On the ground floor, a fountain attracts numerous wish-makers and a grand-sized clock ensures that no one will lose track of the time. There is also a dining area, which offers a variety of teas, coffees and snacks.

Animal-lovers will enjoy the many displays of animals - both large and small, extinct and those still in existence today. Indeed, the Royal Museum is quite a historical place. Its sections on Scottish and Egyptian history are particularly impressive.

The Royal Museum is a special place, with lots to see and do. There are many weird and wonderful artifacts to be seen - and look out for the formula one car! A great place for kids and adults alike, it has a little bit of something for everyone.

This place is excellent and it’s free, I remember being a kid wandering around the place for hours and I still do.
The building is a magnificent structure with a glass roof flooding the main hall with natural light, it’s a wonderful sight.
The artefacts within the museum range from geology to technology, industry to decorative arts and many more.
You would really need a full day to properly see everything within the museum and even then miss something.
I enjoy the natural history section the most, I love this place, I could spend a whole afternoon wandering around the different mammals, reptiles, birds it goes on and on. They also have a really large display of bugs and insects, all right not everyone's cup of tea, but the place is fascinating.
This is a place you have to visit, there's something for everyone

The entrance of this museum is just stunning. There is the glass ceiling up above with the light pouring in and the balconies to the side. The two giant fishponds, the happy chatter, the Millenium Clock (maybe a bit nightmare inducing if you look close but an incredibly intricateand beautiful piece of work with light and sound effects) and a lovely cafe which serves good coffees and a lovely scone with the nicest jam - the perfect place for afternoon tea! You can really spend hours and hours in here without getting bored and can go again and again, which I often do. Like Ericka (fellow reviewer) the animal exhibits are the best I've ever seen and I often pop in just for a quick look if I'm walking past. This really is one of Edinburghs top attractions and well worth a visit.

The Royal Museum on Chamber street is not what I expected. Expectations: stuffy, stodgy, overbearing and baroque. Those were some of the adjectives I fully expected to be in full representation at the Royal Museum of Scotland. I went a little grudgingly. Imagine, three hours later one satisified smiling girl. The Royal Museum is akin to my favourite type of museum- the ones that are always depicted in hip New York literati vehicle. Ie: when Margot and Richie Tenenbaum go to sleep over at the museum- or when Holden Caulfield and Phoebe take a walkabout. This is THAT kind of museum. The animal exhibit is possibly my favourite exhibit in the world. The animals are in huge glass cases- you can walk about and look at grizzlies, lions, tigers, the like. And there is none- you'll see my judgment here- of all those boring museumesque 'learning' bits that I never read anyways (if you are the type that does, no offense, and this museum will still be great, I promise). I could go to the this Museum over and over again. The inside foyer is flooded with light- which is rare in Scotland, and there are goldfish ponds. In addition, the cafe was just featured in the Guardian as one of the best places to grab a coffee in Edinburgh. And, it's free entry. Do it.

The Royal Museum is one of the nicest, lightest places you'll walk into in Edinburgh. Its main hall is flooded with light and adds a tinkly airiness to the chatter of those milling about. This is helped by the fish ponds in the middle of the floor - an unexpected living exhibit in a big museum like this. Visit if you've got kids to entertain, or if you too like learning stuff by bashing things around and pressing buttons on screens - there's a great interactive section. But also wander in for the chiming of the Millennium Clock - an intricate and rather chilling clockwork reflection on the 20th Century. Also, good coffee and light food from the cafe in the middle of the tall, light main hall.
