Tokyo is a real gem in Newcastle (and I hope Tokyo has a bar called Newcastle, just for balance). So good is Tokyo that it would be a fine addition to any city, just about anywhere else in the world. Seriously.
After you walk up some steps which look like they’ve been transported from Narnia, you end up in a modern, lively bar which has one of the best terraces you’re likely to get anywhere. The terrace and the bar are almost one room, so if you’re a smoker or indeed, you’ve got clement weather, this is a must-visit.
The drinks are good and it’s open late while DJs play to a vibrant and very friendly crowd. This really is a world away from the Newcastle you’ve seen on Street Wars and heard about in anecdotes. If you’re after a decent cocktail, you won’t go wrong here. I can’t remember how well stocked the bar was on the beer front, but I certainly don’t remember complaining at the time (and I complain a lot).
It’s fresh, welcoming and a really excellent place to hang out.

Tokyo is just a beautiful bar, especailly the upstairs. I just wanted to add a review to recommend it for private hire- we had a drinks reception after our wedding in the upstairs bit, and it was really amazing.
Got loads of delicious canapes for £5 a head, cava, beers etc at £2.50 with a tab behind the bar…a great time was had by all and for not a lot of cash- especially when you compare it to what 'proper’ wedding function places want to charge you. Staff were lovely and friendly too…
definitely recommend it for a drink anyway (specailly the cocktails!) but look into it if you’re after an interesting place for a party!

good place for cocktails, not my first choice place to go but have been known to have fun here, can be overly busy for my liking though so be prepared for that.

good little place with a good little atmosphere. The people who get in here seem the be people who are out just to have a good time which you have to like.
Can be a bit of a tight squeeze, especially going up and down the stairs, but the positives far outweigh the negatives. Friendly staff, and conveniently the ladies who get in there all seem to be stunning :) this place cant be ignored for a couple of drinks earlier on, before hitting some of the 'rowdier’ places.

Lovely place and innovative use of space - only been there during the day but it was really cool. It was beautiful weather so we sat out on the terrace which was really nice. No views to tell you where you are and you could be in any 'new’ bar in the country but service is typically good.

This is a quality bar in newcastle with a great interior and brilliant roof terrace.
Music is generally of an excellent standard with bank holidays being the pick of the bunch on the roof terrace.
Always a friendly crowd in here and I’ve never seen any trouble just people having a good time and enjoying the music.
If you’re in the Central Station area of Newcastle I would definitely recommend a stop here.

Having tended bar in award winning cocktail bars in London for a number of years, while in newcastle i was recommended Tokyo by a friend, the bar has a fantastic atmosphere with a great upstairs area. The majority of the bartenders are passionate and well trained and are able to put together a good quality drink. However the venue is let down by the quality of its cocktail menu, where the classics are neglected in favor of a lot of new age cocktails, which if you were new or unexperienced as a customer in the cocktail world are always a good place to start. The other honey trap which unfortunately Tokyo falls into along with a considerable number of bars in the North-East is getting the balance of the drink between sweet and sours. I got the impression that drinking cocktails in the North-East is seen as a slightly effeminate pursuit and hence the drinks tend to be a little on the sweet side. Otherwise a fantastic place in which to spend an evening after work or to kick start a big night out.

Tokyo’s a very cool bar, of all the bars in Newcastle I must say here or Revolution are the clear cut winners. Really modern and stylish interior, it’s just a great place to chill out with a few drinks. Like a few others have said; they make a rather good mojito. Drink value is good here too, contrary to what you would expect looking at the place.

Tokyo, what a bar! I believe it’s one of the best in Newcastle. On a summer night its great to sit upstairs and relax to some chilled out music with a mojito…heaven. The staff are friendly and know what they are doing interms of cocktails etc; smartly dressed too.
On the roof terrace there is a worn brick wall which is ingeniously used to house small candles and fairly lights which helps to create ambiance and intimacy, a great environment on a night out away from drunken dancers and noise.
My only complaint is its a bit pricey, hence the 4*!

This is Digital’s sister bar, so if you are heading to Digital to see a DJ that night, then it is likely you will begin the fun in the more chilled out and funky Toyko. It has a great downstairs area with candlelit boothes, and upstares there is an outdoor terrace, where in true Northern spirit, everyone braves the cold British weather and after a few of their delicious cocktails/world beers/etc. you dont notice anyway! Well situated for the train station.

This bar makes you feel younger by its environment. You get a unique experience going there as not a lot of other bars offer similar things. Has two floors so that people can move and mix about. Recommended.

This bar located in walking distance from Newcastle station is a cool, modern and cosy bar. Downstairs is a cosy, dark bar with nice decor and a quiet place to drink. Upstairs is a good sized covered roof terrace, perfect for summer evenings and heated in the winter! This bar is funky with a brilliant atmosphere, great place to grab a sophisticated cocktail or upmarket lager!
