Arthur seat is an extinct volcano in the centre of Edinburgh surrounded my Holyrood Park. This is a must see locationf ro anyone visiting Edinburgh and any one who lives here should be thoughroughly ashamed if they ahve not climbed it yet!
The climb to the top is not difficult but for those less able you can drive half way up and look at the views from here or start your climb from here.
The pond at the foot of the hill and the small castle ruins are a favourite with children who like to feed the ducks and swans and climb on the ruins.
Salisbury Crags are also part of Arthur Seat and look spectacular but remember and be careful near the edges.
This is a great place to visit and is absolutley free so get your walking boots on!

there is a choice of either the harder to climb or easier.Whichever one you climb you will have an amazing view of edinburgh.Or like me you can take a car and there’s a route that will take you up and down the hill withought the hard work.

So, you go to Edinburgh and discover that there’s a massive basalt hill right in the middle of town. You do some research and discover that its crown land, has been so for time immemorium, and that in the late middle ages it served as the King’s deer hunting park. Oh, and it has medieval hillforts on it. And a ruined Abbey.

Basically, a trip to Edinburgh simply isn’t complete without a walk up this amazing feature. There are numerous routes to the top through a suprisingly wild highland environment of gorse and heather - however, whichever way you choose (coming from the east probably requires the least exertion) there awaits at the top an unparalleled panoramic view of the Scottish capitol. Go up on a clear day with a picnic and take in the sights.

It’s free! It’s an extinct Volcano! Arthur’s Seat has the best views in (and of!) the city, has the friendliest people of all the parks and is a great place to visit. Climb to the top - it’s worth it! Also check out the ruined chapel on the side near the swan lake, excellent places to explore on those summer afternoons…

The long extinct Volcano that is Arthur’s Seat makes for a dramatic and awe-inspiring backdrop to Edinburgh’s Old Town. Located in Holyrood Park, a brisk hike up to the summit (251m) is sure to get the blood pumping in any individual. A great way to blow away the hungover cobwebs and clear the mind. A must do for anyone new to the city and of course for the aesthetic qualities it exudes - just be sure to be a firm grip on your hat and any small people you have in tow. Amazing.

This easily accessible hill is one of the finest places to ramble in Edinburgh. It's protruding rock face is a dramtic sight - and perhaps a slightly less appetising adventure for the less faint-hearted!

Arthur's seat provides a lovely walk all year round, while plant-lovers will particularly enjoy frequenting the hill in spring time, when the flowers are in bloom.

Ascenting the hill takes around half an hour, depending on the speed and fitness of those undertaking the walk. The views atop the hill render this a very worthwhile experience.

Arthur's Seat is a fantastic scenic place great for walks, runs, cycles and general seeing! It's is not a hard climb and the view from various points is very rewarding, seeing much of Edinburgh.

You can walk up or walk round. It is great to go for a run or a cycle round, I have yet to cycle up to the top though!! Maybe some day.

It is a good idea to go and get out the house for some real fresh air. Beside Arthur's Seat there is also the Craggs, scenic too and a great walk.

Guttied Haddie - Arthur's Seat

A friend of mine thought this title refered to a drunk Scots fishwife! In fact it's the name of the distinctive scree/cliff feature on the South side of Arthur's Seat that looks exactly like a gutted haddock.

The attraction of the Gutted Haddie is that it's a nice scramble for those of you that fancy a more challenging hill climb. It's not for the unfit, but seasoned cliff climbers would say it's for toddlers.

You can warm up to the climb by walking up the Radical Road; this is the walk that follows the base of the distinctive red sandstone cliffs of Arthur's Seat.

Geology experts will understand the detail of these dramatic formations, but basically these cliffs are made of cooled magma; molten rock that forms in deep chambers in the earth and is rarely exposed above ground into crystalised rock. The heat of this magma distorted the pre exisitng ancient sea bed that covered Lothian a million or so years ago.

As you get to the top of the path the cliffs get lower, there's a dip into a valley and straight ahead of you, across the small dip, is the rise into the Guttied Haddie.

It involves a steep, almost vertical hill climb that trails up the right hand side of the scree slope. To your left you can now see a gouge in the cliffs leading up to the top of Arthur's Seat. Traverse along the slightly tricky, sandy bit that runs along the top of the scree slope to the beginning of the scramble and now you should be looking up towards the top of Arthur's Seat.

How you scramble up this part is entirely up to you, but if you're not that experienced, take your time, especially towards the top of the narrow gouge, and plan each move. At the top of this climb there's an easy option: you can follow the hill round to the right and take the easy trail to the top, or you can carry on up the cliff climb above.

This is like a series of giant steps. The rock is lovely, not crumbly, nice and firm with plenty of ledges.

Now you should be at the top where you're free to enjoy the view, with the added frisson of accomplishment having braved the challenge of the Gutted Haddie!

Arthur's Seat is a walker's paradise as the many different paths leading to the top of the hill vary from well-worn footpaths to more steep and treacherous climbs. On a clear day, a walk up Arthur's Seat will take roughly half an hour, with the occasional stop to take in the scenery and to catch your breath. The main path starts opposite the Holyrood Palace car park and begins with a steep incline which eventually levels off to a small hill. A man-made staircase rises steeply from the hill and takes you to the top of the Seat. The effort to get to the top is well worth it as the splendour and diversity of Edinburgh and its landmarks awaits. Arthur's Seat offers 360 degree views of the city that stretch as far as horizon.

Arthers Seat is a fantastic place for Adults and children of all ages. With its gorgeous veiws , beautiful ponds and surrounding wildlife. It makes the main peak of the group of hills which form most of Holyrood Park. It has an amazing history and is full of adventures.
You can take the kids for a long walk, some hill climbing or even just a picnic by the pond. It also makes a lovely walk for the romantics or for just being alone for some quiet time. There are many runs organised around Arthers Seat and you can even climb to the highest peek if you dare..
A simple thing like feeding the ducks and swans is such a joy here.

This is a must for both locals and visitiors. It looks big from a distance, but is not a tough hill to climb as there are many different routes. Ideal for a sunday afternoon family activity. If you are unsure, you can drive around it, although it's not the same as walking to the top for that view! The ducks in the pond must be the best fed in Edinburgh, and there are some good spots on the lower ground for a picnic.

Arthur's seat is one of Edinburgh's seven hills - i think and definately worth a walk. You can get there by car and then stroll up the hill for a pic nic or just to admire the view of the city. Can be quite romantic too. There is a few lakes on the way up so if you hve little ones they may like feeding the ducks.

Arthurs Seat sits in the centre of Edinburgh and dominates any skyline. The most pronounced of the 7 hills of Edinburgh, it is a walk that is worth doing. It is a joy to sit on the top of the hill on a summer’s day and watch the world go by, you feel like you could be in the middle of the countryside. You can see across to Fife, the Bridges and even out to North Berwick. Even on a wet and windy day, the views over the city are spectacular. Don’t be daunted by the climb, it’s an easy walk, go round the back to find a longer but less steep route to the top.
