It’s been a while since I visited the Witchery, but for me it’s one of Edinburgh’s top restaurants. The restaurant has to separate dining areas which have a completely different atmosphere. Upstairs is cosy but quite unremarkable. Downstairs in the “secret garden” however is quite beautiful and is romantically lit with candles on each of the steps in the evenings.

Branded as one of the best - if not the best - restaurants in the City. Well certainly the interiors live up to the expectations! Absolutely stunning! Walls covered in 17th century wood salvaged from the nerby StGiles Cathedral, comfortable furniture and just enough candlelight to make a romantic dinner perfect. What else? A lot of famous people visited and ate there - Michael Douglas, Cathrine Zeta-Jones, Matt Groening, Jacques Villneuve, Jack Nicholson and many others that I can’t remeber right now!
Moving on to the menu - the card changes every night but there are several positions to choose from, all made superbly to make you feel special. A vide range of wines and champagnes, plus many other things to drink.
But there are bound to be some minuses too:
- service is very caring and active but looks a bit tired and more formal than friendly
- no drink card (you have to ask about everything and dont see the prices before ordering)
- very little space inside (table are squshed one next to another which doesnt make it very intimate)
All in all worth of trying but be prepared to spend at least 50-60 pounds per person!

Beautiful place, like a hidden treasure chest and in a fantastic location on the royal mile. I went for lunch and I’m not going to lie it was expensive and there wasnt much on the plate so a bag of chips on the way home was what we needed but a place to try once in a lifetime!! The appeal for us was that in the guestbook lots of celebs had been there and we were made to feel like royalty!!

Awesome restaurant - just brilliant. Millybroadbent has summed it up very nicely with her description - it is a really magical place to go and visit. The venue is just superb at the foot of Edinburgh Castle and is beautifully lit to give the whole place a fabulous atmosphere.

The friendly and knowledgeable staff, brilliant food and the venue is just about as good as it gets. The wine list really is a massive book (think encyclopedia not airport novel as a size guide)...for me I had to stick to the front...but if you have the money there is an amazing choice if you go back through the book.

It's an absolute bargain if you go for a pre- or post- theatre sitting.

Can't recommend it highly enough - if you are in Edinburgh, get yourself along there. Especially if you are after a romantic setting...although it's not just for dates, it's worth a visit whoever you are with.

Located in a historic sixteenth-century building at the gates of Edinburgh Castle. The Witchery creates a magical dining experience and although it is quite pricey it's worth it. The wine list is a giant old book - I've never seen anything like it. Offer post theatre menu which is brilliant value
