I have been to Matsuba many times. It’s one of my favourite Japanese restaurants in London. The sushi and sashimi is very fresh. It has fairly typical Japanese food e.g. tempura, udon, edamame, ramen, etc but they are always of the best quality.

Downsides are that the prices are expensive and service can be slow, and the restaurant can be somewhat noisy when full.

The lunch menu is the best value and very filling (£16 for a bento box).

Food was admittedly good but not THAT good. It was very pricey, and service was average. Also, not baby friendly. Be warned any mums wanting to eat there. Make sure you get a baby sitter!

would recommend Maki Yaki in Kingston where food is just as good but at a fraction of the price and is children friendly!

They overbook tables which has meant a table booked for 9.15pm has not been available until almost 10pm, and that after much complaining. Despite this, we returned a few weeks later. Very long gaps between dishes, some of which had to be chased. And rudeness beyond belief. Diners at two other tables had issues as well. The high staff turnover says something too!
Not going back in a hurry. There is no shortage of good restaurants keen on offering genuine hospitality.

Matsuba is a great place to experience freshly-prepared sushi, and will be a revelation to you if the only sushi you've ever had is that conveyor belt stuff at Yo! Sushi.

The lunchtime bento boxes are the best value. The 'Matsuba special' bento box (£16.50 last time I went) gives you a bit of everything, including miso soup, rice and salad, and best for those who like a bit of variety. Otherwise you can choose boxes that contain mainly sashimi or tempura or teriyaki.

Lunchtimes can sometimes be busy so if you are dead set on eating here on a particular day, try and book in advance. Be warned that this isn't a place you should go for a quick lunch (the sushi is freshly prepared to order), but with the quality of food on offer, you really shouldn't be rushing it anyway.

Matsuba is easily the best Japanese restaurant in Richmond. But it comes at a price! A cheap main course is 15 quid, so make sure you stop by the cashpoint before you go here.

I had a bento box and it was delicious. The service wasn't fantastic but they were really busy so i will forgive them.

If you're really looking to splurge, try the Kobe massaged beef. F'ing pricey but from the contented look and lip smacking from the chap on the table opposite us, it look like it's worth it.

Delicious food and a great place to take your mum.
