One of the most central and relaxing of Ghent's selection of quality beer houses. A menu of over 100 beers contains all the common brands plus a few surprises, albeit at slightly inflated prices.

Very relaxing if you can find a seat by the river outdoors on a sunny day, but being right in the middle of tourist central be prepared for it to be a bit packed and less pleasant at peak times.

The gent's toliet is a bit odd and 'open plan' as you can still see the main bar while we're weeing. A bit disconcerting, that, especially if you've already drunk a couple of bottles.

If you're in the mood for food, try to get into Chez Leontine next door. They use the same beer menu as here- in fact if you order a beer in there, they pop out of the door into the Waterhuis to get it- but also serve food in a slightly more comfortable environment. There's excellent food there.

The fabulously named Water House on the Beer Canal is situated on the waterside across from the Gravensteen. This atmospheric bar is definitely on the beer tourist trail, but despite that is a lovely place to expand your knowledge of Belgian beers.

In the summer, the terrace is surrounded by flowers, and you can watch the canal traffic meandering by. In winter, retreat inside to the snug bar, although take care not to burn yourself on the stove if that’s the only space remaining.

The beer menu is extensive - over 150 types I believe - so be prepared for any beer conoisseurs to take an age to order. There are plenty of other options and some bar snacks are available. It can get very busy, so be prepared to retreat and try again another time if that’s not your thing.
